The goal was to reach the Top 8, and that objective has been achieved at Pula Golf, the renowned Mallorcan course hosting the Ladies European Senior Team Championship. Starting this Thursday, with England as their first opponent, Spain embarks on the second and final phase in their quest for what would be their fourth title, following their victories in 1996, 2021, and 2023.
The sixth-placed Spaniard started the second qualifying day, after which the eight teams still in contention for medals were determined, with Spain currently in second place. The day's challenges, including strong winds, resulted in higher scores—Spain took fourteen more strokes than on Tuesday—and consequently, a drop to sixth place.
In one of the first groups of the morning, Soledad Fernández de Araoz, who had been outstanding on the first day (71), couldn't find her birdie, which led to a final score of 79 strokes. Even so, the Madrid native has secured a Top 10 position in the symbolic individual leaderboard with a total of +6.
Even more impressive was María de Orueta (+5 to the total), who scored even par for the course to send a message: she arrives at the decisive moment in great form.
For her part, Macarena Campomanes, a regular mainstay of the team, finished these two days with +10 (rounds of 76 and 78 strokes). Her best form, an invaluable asset, will also be necessary to face the elimination phase with the best possible attitude.
María Castillo, with +8 to the total (76+80), Natalia Martínez-Reboredo, with +15 (77+82), and Amelia Alonso (+17, 79+82) have also contributed in this initial phase.
Now comes the moment of truth: the knockout stage. Their first opponent will be England, a consistently tough team looking to reclaim a title that has eluded them since 2019. The best part is that Spain is playing at home, in front of their fans. Let's go for it!.
