Macarena Campomanes, María de Orueta, Soledad Fernández de Araoz, María Castillo, Natalia Martínez-Reboredo and Amelia Alonso – all of them captained by Rocío Ruiz de Velasco – make up the sextet of players who will defend the Spanish colors in the European Senior Women's Team Championship, which is held at the Pula Golf course in Mallorca between September 2 and 6.

The Spanish team, one of the countries participating in this competition reserved for those over 50, comes to Pula Golf with the intention of repeating past and recent successes, with special mention for the first gold medal obtained in 1996 and, more recently, for those obtained in 2021 and 2023, completing an excellent progression that began in 2018 with a bronze medal improved to the following edition, silver in 2019.

It so happens that all the selected players, with the exception of Amelia Alonso, who replaces Mónica Jessen, are repeating their presence in the Spanish team that won the gold medal in a highly brilliant manner in the 2023 edition held in El Saler.

This is the third time in history that this European Senior Women's Team Championship has taken place in Spain, following editions held in 1996 in Pals and in 2023 in El Saler, with the encouraging circumstance that on both occasions the victory ended up being Spanish.

A reliable team with players boasting impressive resumes

The Spanish team boasts several highly regarded representatives in the senior category, thanks to their impressive sporting careers. These include Macarena Campomanes – European Senior Individual Champion in 2016, 2018, and 2019, and winner of the British Ladies Senior Championship in 2017 – and María de Orueta, Spanish Senior Champion from 2015 to 2018, who also claimed the Spanish title as European Senior Individual Champion in 2020.

María Castillo, for her part, apart from being a three-time Spanish Senior Champion (2012, 2013 and 2023), is distinguished by her contribution in team competitions, a distinction also held by Natalia Martínez-Reboredo in 2022.

The Spanish team is completed by Soledad Fernández de Araoz and Amelia Alonso. Fernández de Araoz also boasts impressive achievements in her sporting career, including the 2024 Spanish Senior Individual Championship and second place in the 2023 Spanish Senior Women's International Individual Championship, while Alonso earned her place through the National Senior Women's Ranking.

Spain, reaching the podium thirteen times

The Spanish team has won this competition twice. The first time was in 1996, the year the Spanish women secured their first victory with Marta Balet, Isabel Lorenzana, Vicky Pertierra, Emma Villacieros, Josefina González Allende, and Asunción Azpilicueta.

The Spanish team has also won this competition on two other occasions, these much closer in time, in the 2021 edition thanks to the joint contribution of Macarena Campomanes, Soledad Fernández de Araoz, Xonia Wünsch, María de Orueta, María Castillo and Natalia Martínez-Reboredo, with the captaincy of Rocío Ruiz de Velasco.

They all repeated their triumph in 2023, with Mónica Jessen replacing Xonia Wünsch.

Furthermore, Spain has finished second five times (1991, 1999, 2008, 2011 and 2019) and third on another five occasions (1989, 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2018). Thirteen times on the podium so far.

France, with six wins (2006, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2024), Germany (2009, 2018 and 2022), England (2014 and 2019), Ireland (2013 and 2016), Italy (2012), Scotland (2010) and Sweden (2008) complete the overall list of winners of this tournament since the European Golf Federation took over its organization directly in 2006.

Competition system

The competition is divided into two phases: a first Stroke Play, in which you have to qualify among the top eight to access the match bracket with a chance of winning, and a second Match Play in which you have to overcome three rounds of eliminations to obtain the coveted title.
