Pula Golf, the renowned Mallorcan course that has hosted numerous major tournaments, is preparing to host another event where excitement and spectacle are the order of the day. Between September 2nd and 6th, golfers representing twenty countries will compete for the gold medal at the European Ladies Senior Team Championship, with Spain as one of the undisputed favorites.

A vibrant opening ceremony, with various poses for the official photos, determined parades towards the flag that represents each of the twenty participating countries, friendship and camaraderie flowing spontaneously among all those present…, the expectation surrounds a tournament with a good emotional charge for the Spanish women, who bravely take on the challenge of maintaining the path of success that distinguishes them as one of the best teams in Europe in the category.

The tension generated by the event, which brings together 120 players from 20 different countries, including Spain, was evident at the opening parade itself. Spain aspires to repeat the triumphs achieved in the 1996, 2021 and 2023 editions. "We're going for another medal," all the members of the Spanish women's team proclaimed in unison, with evident vocal force, before the great battle began.

“Nobody backs down,” assures Macarena Campomanes, one of the most experienced winners on the Spanish team and in the tournament. “There’s a great feeling among all of us. The fact that it’s being played in Spain again two years after the gold medal at El Saler brings both a responsibility and a great deal of excitement,” the Madrid golfer declares with conviction.

The same applies when asked about the Spanish team's objective. "Well, a medal. That's what we've prepared for. Technically, physically, and mentally, we're well focused on that challenge," states Macarena Campomanes confidently, one of the leaders of a team that has only made one change from those who won in El Saler two years ago: Amelia Alonso for Mónica Jessen.

“From the outside, without knowing the situation, you look at the team and you might think there’s no new generation, no changes, but the perspective is different. We’re here for a reason, because we keep proving that we have the ability to compete at the highest level and aim for a medal. Accumulating certain experiences, knowing what it’s like to win, gives us a boost of confidence and peace of mind that others don’t have,” Macarena Campomanes bravely states.

Aside from the nineteen rival teams facing the Spanish players, all participants share a common enemy in the form of a challenging course, a reputation that precedes Pula Golf and only serves to enhance the experience of those who play it best. “It’s a course with a very exciting and fun finish, especially for the match play phase, but it’s tough for the medal play phase. We know that’s going to happen, which, ironically, gives us peace of mind because everyone faces that difficult finish. The team that handles that part best has a very good chance of winning,” acknowledges the Spanish golfer.

The competition, in any case, continues Macarena Campomanes, is going to be enormous “because France, the defending champion, has a very good team. Switzerland is the same, while the British in match play, once in the knockout stage, are always a very difficult challenge… But we are prepared for everything, even for any surprises that may arise during the tournament.”.

Another challenge is brewing, one that would complete a glorious season for Spanish women's amateur golf. Gold medals at the European Championships (both Open and Under-18 Team), gold, silver, and bronze medals won by Paula Martín, Balma Dávalos, and Andrea Revuelta, along with other outstanding international results… the Spanish seniors are aiming to raise the bar even higher.

“There’s no doubt that the RFEG Women’s Committee has been doing an incredible job in recent years, producing players of extraordinary quality who have won so many titles. They are reaping what they have sown. We like to think it’s important for them to see that there is continuity, that we can set an example that you can continue competing at the highest level and having fun at the senior level. We still get excited when we’re selected, when we put on the Spanish uniform… that’s what we have to convey to them,” concludes Macarena Campomanes, who quickly joins her teammates to face this new challenge for Spanish women’s golf.

Spain, reaching the podium thirteen times

The Spanish team has won this competition twice. The first time was in 1996, the year the Spanish women secured their first victory with Marta Balet, Isabel Lorenzana, Vicky Pertierra, Emma Villacieros, Josefina González Allende, and Asunción Azpilicueta.

The Spanish team has also won this competition on two other occasions, these much closer in time, in the 2021 edition thanks to the joint contribution of Macarena Campomanes, Soledad Fernández de Araoz, Xonia Wünsch, María de Orueta, María Castillo and Natalia Martínez-Reboredo, with the captaincy of Rocío Ruiz de Velasco.

They all repeated their triumph in 2023, with Mónica Jessen replacing Xonia Wünsch.

Furthermore, Spain has finished second five times (1991, 1999, 2008, 2011 and 2019) and third on another five occasions (1989, 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2018). Thirteen times on the podium so far.

France, with six wins (2006, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2024), Germany (2009, 2018 and 2022), England (2014 and 2019), Ireland (2013 and 2016), Italy (2012), Scotland (2010) and Sweden (2008) complete the overall list of winners of this tournament since the European Golf Federation took over its organization directly in 2006.

Competition system

The competition is divided into two phases: a first Stroke Play, in which you have to qualify among the top eight to access the match bracket with a chance of winning, and a second Match Play in which you have to overcome three rounds of eliminations to obtain the coveted title.
