This September, Andalusia will be the true heart of women's golf worldwide as it hosts the 2023 Solheim Cup, an event that will pit the best European and American players against each other at Finca Cortesín, Casares.
A heart that will beat stronger than ever from the Costa del Sol, that Mediterranean coast of the province of Malaga where golf is much more than a sport, since, with more than 70 courses, it is the area with the highest concentration of golf courses in Europe.
Given these facts, the decision to choose this region to host the Solheim Cup for the first time in Spain was not insignificant, and it is clear that this event will become an excellent platform to showcase the countless attractions of the area, both to the millions of viewers who will watch the event on TV and to the thousands of lucky people who will attend the tournament live.
Those watching the competition from home will have more than enough reasons to choose Andalusia for their next vacation, and those among the more than 80,000 who have bought their tickets for the 2023 Solheim Cup will have access to an exceptional cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer.
To begin with, the Solheim Cup is not only the top international competition in women's golf and one of the most important events in women's sports worldwide, it is an event that transcends the sporting aspect and, therefore, will feature a week of concerts, gourmet dinners and countless activities.
And if you still want more, the offer is almost unbeatable.
For example, the strategic location of the Costa del Sol means that emblematic Andalusian cities such as Seville, Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera or Granada are just a stone's throw away, perfect for a getaway before, during or after the Solheim Cup.
Even closer are world-renowned golf courses such as the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, host of the Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters 2023, the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, host of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España 2023 or, of course, the Real Club de Valderrama, stage of great tournaments such as the 1997 Ryder Cup which, without a doubt, marked a before and after in golf tourism in Andalusia.
As for Malaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol, it is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and as such, it has interesting proposals surrounding the figure of the brilliant painter, especially since this year marks 50 years since his death.
There is also the so-called "Route of the Museums of the Costa del Sol" with establishments such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Collection of the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg or the Automobile Museum, and other more curious ones such as the Glass and Crystal Museum, the Miniature Museum, the Bonsai Museum and the Bandit Museum.
Contemporary art and urban art also have their own spaces, such as the Contemporary Art Center of Malaga, the Pompidou Center Malaga, the CAC of Mijas and the CAC of Vélez-Málaga.
Nor should we overlook nature and active tourism, with Natural Parks such as the Sierra de las Nieves, which is also a Biosphere Reserve, or the Fuente de Piedra salt lagoon, with its flamingo reserve.
These are joined by the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, in the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara, where the Nerja Cave is also located, or the karst formations of Las Pedrizas and El Torcal de Antequera.
As for leisure and entertainment, there are many options in lively cities such as "night routes", events like the "White Night" and various themed activities.
And finally, from the Mediterranean cuisine of the coast to the typical products and dishes of the inland villages, the gastronomy of Andalusia stands out for its variety and flavors, and can be tasted in restaurants, beach bars, tapas bars, wineries and Michelin-starred chefs.
In short, all these ingredients make both Andalusia and the Costa del Sol a preferred destination for organizing major sporting events, such as this Solheim Cup, which has everything it takes to become the best edition in its history.
