The unanimous call for a reduction in VAT for the golf industry was one of the central points of the presentation of the independent study conducted by IE University—in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Golf Courses (AECG) and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG)—which highlights the important role the sector can play in the economic recovery phase following the pandemic that has hit Spain. This video, We present the most important points that were discussed on this matter.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, stated during the online presentation of the study that the Spanish Government is considering reducing the VAT rate for the sector from 21 to 10 percent.
“We are working on this demand for a reduction in VAT on golf. It is among the measures we are analyzing, crunching the numbers to understand the impact. It is on the Government's agenda,” the Minister stated, emphasizing that golf “is destined to play a leading role and be an important element in the recovery from this pandemic.”.
Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the RFEG (Royal Spanish Golf Federation), and Claudia Hernández, his counterpart at the AECG (Spanish Association of Golf Clubs), emphasized the importance of establishing this reduction, a point also considered necessary by Antonio Garamendi, President of the CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations). This opens a window to address a demand that dates back to 2012, when the increase was implemented.
