The Alps de Andalucía – Roquetas de Mar has become a true test of survival. The strong gusts of wind that have battered Playa Serena during the first two days have drastically altered the results and turned the Almería course into an extremely demanding challenge, with a setting more reminiscent of a US Open than a typical Alps Tour event.

The difficulty of the course is reflected in a telling statistic: after 36 holes, only three players remain under par in the tournament standings. England's Mason Essam leads the leaderboard at six under par, followed by Italy's Enrico Di Nitto and Spain's Víctor García Broto, both at -1.

Essam continues to hold onto the lead thanks to a solid 68 (-2), built on patience and consistency. The Englishman carded three birdies and a single bogey on a windy day, demonstrating control and maturity in particularly challenging conditions. The British player, still chasing his first Alps Tour victory after coming close with a runner-up finish at the Open de Roissy GP PGA France, will head into the final round with a five-stroke lead and the chance to claim his first title.

«Today was great. To be six under par after two rounds with only two bogeys, I’m over the moon. I’ve been playing some great golf this season, but I’ve been a bit disconnected on and around the greens. It’s nice to start seeing everything coming together. Tomorrow more wind is expected, so the goal remains the same: keep the ball on the fairway, play to the center of the greens, and see where it takes me,» the Englishman explained after finishing his round.

However, the difference in the standings doesn't guarantee peace of mind. Playing conditions have shown that any mistake can be very costly, and both Enrico Di Nitto and Víctor García Broto still have a chance of fighting for the title.

The Italian, winner of the 2024 Alps Tour Grand Final, delivered one of the best performances of the day with a flawless 67 (-3). Di Nitto completed the 18 holes without a single bogey and added three birdies, positioning himself as one of the main threats to the leader. His experience in high-pressure situations makes him a particularly dangerous rival heading into the final round.

Meanwhile, Víctor García Broto emerged as the top Spaniard in the standings thanks to a commendable round of 68 (-2), a result that takes on even greater significance given the circumstances. The player from El Prat carded six birdies and four bogeys to climb to a tie for second place and remain in contention going into the final round.

“Obviously, with the day we had, it was very difficult not to make any mistakes. I’m very happy with how patient I was. These days are very challenging; you have to accept that not every shot is going to go your way, and I think I managed it well. I waited for my moment, made some important putts on the back nine, and finished very well to put the finishing touch on the round. Tomorrow I’ll try to enjoy the round and the position I’m in for the tournament,” García Broto explained after finishing his round.

Spaniards Alejandro Rodríguez Andreu, Álvaro Hernández Cabezuela and Alfonso Buendía share fifth position with a cumulative score of +2.

The cut was set at +7, and a total of 46 players qualified for the third and final round of the Alps de Andalucía – Roquetas de Mar. Play will resume this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with tee times from two fronts, while the featured group, featuring Mason Essam and Enrico Di Nitto, will tee off from the first hole at 10:50 a.m.

Everything is set for a thrilling finale at Playa Serena, where the wind promises to once again play a decisive role in the fight for the title.
