The 2026 European Men's Individual Championship has come to an end on the demanding Finnish course of Linna Golf with a positive outcome for the Spanish delegation thanks to the performances of Sergio Jiménez and Alejandro de Castro, who shared sixth place in a highly competitive setting.

Both Spanish golfers have completed a remarkably consistent tournament, remaining among the top players throughout the week. Sergio Jiménez carded a final round of 70 (-1), while Alejandro de Castro finished with a 71 (par), results that allowed them to advance.

and finish tied with a total of 278 strokes (-6), seven strokes behind the champion, German Tim Wiedemeyer.

Their performance is even more valuable considering the very high level of the tournament, which has brought together the best amateur players in Europe and in which both Spaniards have fought until the end for the top positions, consolidating themselves among the top ten on the continent.

The third Spaniard to make the cut, Álvaro Pastor, was unable to complete his progress on the final day. The Madrid native carded a 73 (+2) for a total of 287 (+3), a result that placed him in 43rd position.

The Spanish expedition was completed by players Yago Horno and Jorge Martín, with coach Salvador Luna and Luis Méndez, director of the RFEG Men's Amateur Technical Committee, who served as captain.

Good start for Álvaro Pastor

The 2026 European Men's Individual Championship kicked off in Finland with the participation of 144 of the continent's best players, including five Spanish representatives.

The high competitive level of the tournament marked the first day, in which a round of 69 strokes (-2), signed by Álvaro Pastor, has only allowed him to place himself in the nineteenth shared position.

Sergio Jiménez also started under par, turning in a card of 70 strokes (-1) to share 36th place. Alejandro de Castro, with a round at even par, occupied 42nd place, while Jorge Martín and Yago Horno finished with 72 (+1) and 73 (+2) strokes, respectively.

The lead in the event went to Frenchman Lev Grinberg, who opened with a first round of 65 strokes (-6).

Alejandro de Castro took over from Spain after the second day

The 2026 Men's Individual European Championships reached their halfway point with a second day marked by significant changes in the standings. At the top, the lead passed to Dutchman Nevill Ruiter and Frenchman Louis Anceaux, while for Spain, the big news was Alejandro de Castro's impressive comeback.

The Catalan player carded a 68 (-3) to bring his total to 139 (-3). This result allowed him to climb thirty places to twelfth, five strokes off the lead.

Sergio Jiménez also staged a remarkable comeback. The Madrid native carded a 70 (-2), climbing twenty-one places to share fifteenth position.

The day, however, was less favorable for the rest of the Spanish contingent. Álvaro Pastor, who started the day as the highest-ranked Spaniard, couldn't maintain his momentum after a round of 75 (+4) and dropped to 54th place. Yago Horno, meanwhile, gained sixteen positions thanks to a round of 72 (+1) and finished in 64th place, while Jorge Martín fell twenty-four places after carding a 76 (+5), sharing 88th position.

Three out of five Spaniards made the cut

The 2016 European Men's Individual Championship completed its third round with three players making the cut. Alejandro de Castro and Sergio Jiménez delivered solid performances that allowed them to climb to sixth and seventh place, respectively. The Catalan player repeated his 68 (-3) from the previous day, and the Madrid native carded an identical round.

Álvaro Pastor also had a remarkable reaction, climbing seventeen places in the standings to share thirty-seventh position and secure passage to the final day.

The day's low point came with Yago Horno and Jorge Martín missing the cut. Horno fell just one stroke short, while Martín finished three strokes short.

Sergio García and José Luis Ballester, the two Spaniards in the tournament's list of winners

For almost three decades Sergio Garcia was the only Spaniard capable of conquering the European Men's Individual Championship, thanks to his victory in 1995, to which he added a runner-up finish in 1997.

The next Spanish triumph had to wait 28 years, when José Luis Ballester won decisively in the 2023 edition held at Pärnu Bay Golf Links (Estonia).

In addition to these two champions, Spanish golf has achieved outstanding results with the runner-up finishes of Borja Queipo de Llano (1988), Álvaro Prat (1991), Pablo Martín (2003), Rafael Cabrera (2005) and David Morago (2013).
