The Madrid High-Performance Center has closed the first edition of the Spanish Junior Pitch & Putt Championship, the MAPFRE Grand Prix, which has been a resounding success in terms of participation –more than one hundred registered players– and play, reflected in the 104 strokes of the Andalusian Carlos Segura
The tournament – sponsored by MAPFRE – brought together many of Spain's rising golf stars in a discipline that is increasingly popular among fans. The young players adapted remarkably well to the short distances, and the first round already saw some impressive scores, such as the 49 strokes by Pablo Sánchez from Madrid.
However, it was on the second day, when the weather was less favorable for the participants, that Carlos Segura improved his first round of 53 strokes, and with 51 he set the best score of the weekend.
In addition to the varied Madrid course – in perfect condition during the two days – five other winners emerged: Cara Baena (112) in the Women's Junior category, Pablo Sánchez (106) in the Men's Junior category, Covadonga Sanjuán (112) in the Women's Junior category, Alejandro del Rey (54) in the Men's Benjamin category, and Ana Peláez (62) in the Women's Benjamin category after a tie-break playoff.
This competition has been created by the Pitch & Putt Committee of the RFEG in order to promote this specialty of golf which is becoming increasingly established in our country.
