Daniel Lightfoot, Director of Sustainable Golf at The R&A, visits the Royal Spanish Golf Federation to strengthen sustainability efforts on golf courses.

Daniel Lightfoot, Director of Sustainable Golf at The R&A for the past year, has visited the Pablo de Olavide University (Seville) and Madrid to closely follow the projects that the Green Section of the RFEG has worked on in recent years to advance the sustainability of golf.

Since the creation of the Green Section in 2002, we have collaborated with The R&A on various initiatives focused on more efficient and environmentally friendly maintenance.

Under the leadership of The R&A's former Director of Sustainability, Steve Isaac, several projects were developed, including advancements in the implementation of more sustainable grass species, the creation of schools to promote golf, the use of plant protection products, irrigation efficiency, and the installation of photovoltaic energy.

One of the most significant projects in recent years has been Golf Course 2030, in which the Spanish Greenkeepers Association and the University of Seville have also participated. This work has allowed for the investigation of non-chemical alternatives for controlling turfgrass diseases, a crucial aspect given current regulations on the use of pesticides on golf courses, as well as identifying the genetic factors that dominate diseases such as Dollar Spot.

During his visit to Seville, Lightfoot toured the facilities of the University of Seville, where various studies are being conducted in collaboration with the Plant Production team led by Professor Manuel Avilés and Celia Borrero. He also visited the area provided by Sevilla Football Club for research on sports turf, with the support of groundsman Carlos Venegas.

In Madrid, Lightfoot visited the RFEG headquarters, where General Director Jorge Sagardoy and Green Section Director David Gómez outlined the main lines of work on sustainability developed by the RFEG, highlighting them as fundamental pieces in the development and promotion of golf in Spain.

The visit concluded at the National Golf Centre, where its Managing Director, Juan Fernández, presented the various sustainability projects implemented in recent years. The CNG serves as a testing ground for the implementation and evaluation of these projects before their application at other Spanish courses.

Lightfoot was able to see firsthand the progress made in Spain and highlighted the effort made, emphasizing the importance of continuing to collaborate to make golf courses increasingly sustainable.

This visit strengthens the relationship between The R&A and the RFEG, with the aim of continuing to research and develop solutions that will allow golf courses to be prepared for the environmental challenges of the future.
