The second day played this Friday at the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas has knocked out the leader of the opening day, the Real Club de Golf de Cerdaña, eliminated by the Club de Golf Escorpión (2-1), while only one of the top three ranked on Thursday —El Prat— has managed to keep alive its dream of lifting the title.
Joining the Catalan team in the semifinals will be Club de Golf Terramar and Real Club de Golf Castiello, the current champion, who had to sweat until the last stroke to overcome the host team.
The Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas came very close to giving itself and its members an even greater day. The home team, third in Thursday's Stroke Play, faced the defending champion, Castiello, and the tie remained close until the very last moment.
And there ended the dream of the home team, after a battle in which the Gran Canaria team once again demonstrated that their third place on the opening day had not been a fluke.
RCG Cerdaña and the uncertainty of the Match Play format
The other big blow of the day came with the elimination of Real Club de Golf de Cerdaña, which had finished as leader of the Stroke Play phase and was therefore one of the big favorites after its extraordinary first day.
But the Match Play qualifiers are another story and the Escorpión Golf Club finished off the leader and is now in the fight for the top positions, also confirming the good feelings it had already left on Thursday.
El Prat, Terramar and Castiello complete the semifinals
Of the top three finishers from the opening day, only El Prat has managed to advance past the first round, defeating Real Club de Golf de La Coruña 2-1. The Catalan team will be joined in the semifinals by Terramar and the current champion, Castiello. The Barcelona-based team also defeated Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro 2-1.
As for the so-called second Flight, in which the teams fight for positions from ninth to 16th, RCG La Herrería, CG Vallromanes, RCG Guadalhorce and RACE continue forward, having also managed to overcome their respective matches against RCG Tenerife, RCG Pedreña, RSHECC and RCG San Sebastián.
