Every golf professional regularly declares the need for thorough physical preparation to ensure their game progresses properly. These pronouncements, however, seem trivial to the vast majority of amateurs, who consider golf a sport that doesn't require extreme physical exertion and can be played with minimal time dedicated to maintaining—let alone improving, which sounds almost sacrilegious—physical fitness.
However, physical conditioning is a vital activity in the daily routine of any golfer, fundamental for preventing most of the injuries and ailments typical of players, which are far more significant and troublesome than they might initially seem. Furthermore, the assertion that physical conditioning is a vital activity has taken on a literal meaning in the case of Miguel Ángel Molina, a highly promising player currently on scholarship at the Blume Residence National Golf School, who suffered a serious motorcycle accident last quarter. Fortunately, it did not have tragic consequences thanks, according to the doctors who have treated him in recent months, to his excellent muscle development, the result of the rigorous physical training he has undergone in recent years.
Miguel Ángel Molina crashed while overtaking an SUV parked illegally, injuring his entire right side: his tibia, fibula, and wrist were broken, and his hip was dislocated. “The truth is, I was lucky, but the doctors told me that it wasn't worse because my muscles were well-developed, so my back wasn't affected, which would have been the worst thing,” says Miguel Ángel Molina calmly.
“Over the past year, I’ve focused heavily on physical conditioning thanks to the advice of the coaches at the Blume Residence. Half an hour a day of continuous running, stretching, leg and arm weights… a bit of everything. And now I know it’s the best time I could have ever spent,” he says with conviction, hoping to return to playing in a month if his rehabilitation, as he expects, goes smoothly.
Physical preparation, a vital activity? Of course it is, as Dragan Tancic, Miguel Ángel Molina's physical trainer last year, kept repeating, and we should be extremely satisfied with his dedication and professionalism.
