The 123rd edition of The Women's Amateur Championship takes place next week, from June 22nd to 27th, at Muirfield Golf Club in northern Scotland. Adding to the excitement is the presence of defending champion Paula Martín in the Spanish contingent, returning to Europe after a successful season in the United States. The tournament serves as an excellent warm-up for this summer's European Team Championships.
The tournament boasts a strong field of the world's best female golfers, including several Spanish players who hold top positions. Madrid natives Paula Martín (2nd in the World Ranking) and Andrea Revuelta (4th) – fresh off their U.S. Collegiate League victory with Stanford – lead a group of nine Spanish golfers.
Both will be accompanied by other compatriots who also develop their careers in the United States, such as Paula Francisco, Cayetana Fernández and Ángela Revuelta, also from Madrid, Balma Dávalos from Castellón, Anna Cañadó from Tarragona, Martina López-Lanchares from Gipuzkoa and Adriana García Terol from Barcelona.
This delegation will be fully assisted by the coach Marcelo Prieto and the Sports Director of the RFEG Professional Technical Committee, Javier Herranz.
These eight golfers will join some other players expected to achieve great things in the professional arena in the next decade: Americans Farah O'Keefe and Anna Davis, Frenchwoman Sara Brentcheneff, Englishwoman Lauren Crump, Belgian Savannah De Bock,…
The victories of Azahara Muñoz, Carlota Ciganda, Belén Mozo or Paula Martín herself in their day are the reference to follow for Spanish players.
The tournament is played over five days, although at the end of the second day only the top 64 players out of the 144 participants will have a place in the draw. Once that point is reached, it will be time for the knockout rounds for the title.
Six Spanish women are among the winners
The Women's Amateur Championship – known as the British Ladies Amateur until 2019 – is one of the most prestigious international women's tournaments and holds great memories for Spanish golf. Six Spanish players have lifted the championship trophy, a select group that hopes to increase this year.
Marta Prieto (in 2001), Elisa Serramiá (2003), Belén Mozo (2006), Carlota Ciganda (2007), Azahara Muñoz (2009) and Paula Martín (2025), the first five of whom later became professionals, secured Spanish victories on British soil.
