Pablo Ereño is now a winner on the HotelPlanner Tour. And he achieved it in the most spectacular way possible. The Madrid native conquered the Challenge de Catalunya at Fontanals Golf after a thrilling playoff against Denmark's Hamish Brown, culminating an unforgettable week that could mark a turning point in his professional career.
With just a few months as a professional, Ereño opened his account after winning a two-hole playoff when both players finished tied at 22 under par. A victory of enormous sporting and strategic value: the win practically guarantees his status for the rest of the season and opens the door wide for him to compete for a spot on the DP World Tour.
The final day lived up to all expectations. Fontanals Golf experienced a Sunday of maximum tension, constant changes in the lead, and a veritable birdie festival between two players who refused to give up.
Hamish Brown started the day with a two-stroke lead, but the leaderboard began to tighten from the very first holes. Every birdie was met with an immediate response from his rival in a spectacular battle that turned the back nine into a high-level duel.
Ereño carded a brilliant 66 (-5), while the Dane turned in a 68 (-3). But the decisive moment came on the 18th hole.
The Madrid native needed to sink a putt of almost four meters for birdie and force a playoff. Brown, meanwhile, had a birdie opportunity from over eight meters to win the tournament. Ereño sank his. The Dane missed. And Fontanals exploded.
In the playoff, both made birdie on the first extra hole. On the second, Ereño withstood the pressure with a solid par while Brown bogeyed. That's where the first professional title was officially born for one of the great rising stars of Spanish golf.
“The key has been patience”
Far from being an easy victory, the triumph came after a day of immense mental exertion for the Madrid native. “There were some very difficult moments,” Ereño admitted. “After the 8th hole, where I four-putted for bogey, I felt I had to come back again. I don't know why, but it seems I like to make things difficult.” And the reaction was immediate: four consecutive birdies to put him right back in contention.
He even thought the tournament was slipping away for good after a bad tee shot on the 15th hole. “That’s when I really thought I might not make it. But then I told myself I needed to make a couple more birdies to get into the playoff… and in the end I did it.”.
“The key today was patience and fighting spirit,” he explained. “I hit some bad shots and some really good shots. I sent a wedge into the water on the 14th, but I managed to stay in the game.”.
The champion also highlighted the enormous emotional value of the putt he sank on the 18th. “That birdie is what you train for. To have that putt on the last hole and be able to sink it.”.
A victory that changes his career
Beyond the trophy, Ereño is perfectly aware of what this victory means for his immediate future. “This win changes everything for me,” he admitted. “It allows me to play the rest of the year with much more peace of mind because I didn't yet have a full senior team.”.
Thanks to his victory in Fontanals, Ereño has also climbed to second place in the Road to Mallorca ranking of the HotelPlanner Tour, just behind South African MJ Daffue, the only player with two wins this season. With only a few months as a professional, the Madrid native has gone from being one of the year's biggest breakout stars to becoming one of the leading contenders for promotion to the DP World Tour.
The Madrid native wanted to dedicate the victory especially to his closest family and friends. “It motivates me a lot to have my father and my family here. I feel like I'm not just playing for myself, I'm also playing for them, and I dedicate this victory to them.”.
MJ Daffue came close
Another of the day's big stars was MJ Daffue. The South African, currently number one on the HotelPlanner Tour and winner of two tournaments this season, carded a spectacular bogey-free round with eight birdies to finish third at 20 under par.
Daffue was aiming for his third victory of the year this week, a result that would have automatically secured him direct promotion to the DP World Tour. The South African will now have another opportunity next week in Denmark or at the Challenge de España in Isla Canela.
The Challenge de Catalunya has been supported by the HotelPlanner Tour, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Fontanals Golf Club, the Catalan Golf Federation and the Higher Sports Council, as well as Allianz, AON, the Girona Provincial Council, Fontanals City Council, Ríos Renovables, BCD Group, Kyocera, Volvo, Bodegas Juan Gil, Mahou, Solán de Cabras, Revel and Titleist, under the organization of JGolf.
