In this series, we've unearthed images from the RFEG's photographic archive, each one telling a beautiful golf story. The story of our golf. They are OUR CHAMPIONS.
📆 June 3, 2007
⛳ Neguri and El Prat
▶ Quite an omen. On June 3, 2007, two very young people fulfilled their dream of becoming Spanish National Champions, one in the men's competition at El Prat (Barcelona) and the other in the women's competition at Neguri (Vizcaya). That day, without knowing it, another milestone was reached in the successful careers of two golfers with much more to come.
▶ In Terrassa, Nacho Elvira was crowned national champion with a solid performance that included two rounds under par. The Cantabrian, who began his studies at the University of Texas that same year, finished five strokes ahead of Jesús Legarrea from Navarre.
▶ Gonzalo Vicente, Andrés Cuenca, Jordi García Pinto, Xavi Puig or a very young Carlos Pigem were protagonists of a tournament of enormous prestige that in its successive editions has had as champions Jorge Campillo, Adrián Otaegui, Jon Rahm, Ángel Hidalgo or Adriá Arnaus.
Meanwhile, several hundred kilometers away, Carlota Ciganda was winning the Spanish National Championship in Neguri. It was her second victory, following her win a year earlier in her hometown of Ulzama. The Navarrese athlete continued to add to her already extraordinary amateur record.
▶ Carlota Ciganda exerted absolute dominance over her rivals from the first day, when she stood out with a round of 70 strokes. On the final day, a round of 71 strokes was enough to leave her pursuers, Araceli Felgueroso and Azahara Muñoz, without any chance.
▶ On June 3, 2007, young Nacho Elvira and Carlota Ciganda went to bed dreaming of doing the same thing they had done that week as professional golfers. Thirteen years later, we can say that the dream has come true.
