▶So beloved and fondly remembered by the Spanish golf community, it's always a good time to celebrate the sporting achievements of Celia Barquín, one of the best golfers of her generation. One afternoon in July 2011, she laid the foundation for an international career that reached its peak with her victory in the 2018 European Individual Championship.
▶Celia's first international victory came at the Chiberta Grand Prix, one of the traditional summer tournaments held in the French Aquitaine region, whose past winners included Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and Itziar Elguezabal. There, in the south of France, the Cantabrian player enjoyed a magnificent run with the tournament, winning it three times in a row.
▶The first was in 2011, an edition that featured an all-Spanish podium in the women's category. Celia Barquín was followed by Teresa Caballer from Alicante and Anna Arrese from Barcelona, who tied for second place.
▶A year later, Celia Barquín returned to Chiberta to defend her title, finishing one stroke ahead of France's Ariane Provot. Two years later, in 2013, she completed her trilogy, winning with much more authority. This time, the Spanish player dominated from start to finish, finishing four strokes ahead of France's Laure Castelain.
▶Until she broke into winning events outside our borders, the Cantabrian golfer had demonstrated her talent in other national events: she had been the Spanish Junior Champion in 2010, a finalist in the Lacoste Promises 2012 and had achieved collective victories in the 2009 Junior Interclub and the 2012 Interterritorial Under 25 Women's.
▶In the town of Anglet, near Biarritz, Celia, our Celia, is remembered as an extraordinary competitor who is part of the history of one of the oldest tournaments of the summer golf season.
