In this series, we've unearthed images from the RFEG's photographic archive, each one telling a beautiful golf story. The story of our golf. They are OUR CHAMPIONS.

📆 August 28, 2004

⛳ Ulzama Golf Club (Navarra)

▶ The Navarrese course hosts the 2004 European Ladies' Individual Championship, bringing together the continent's best golfers, some of whom went on to become successful professionals. Victory, with an eight-stroke lead over the runner-up, goes to local player Carlota Ciganda… who has just turned 14!

▶ The golfer from Ulzama was joined on the podium by two other Spanish players: Elisa Serramiá and María Hernández, both with the same number of strokes. But the Spanish success didn't end there; Tania Elósegui from San Sebastián finished in fifth place.

▶ In 2004 alone, Carlota Ciganda was the Spanish Children's and Cadet Champion, the European Champion in the Under-16 and Senior categories, and won a gold medal in the Under-16 and Junior European Team Championships. And all this, we repeat, at the age of 14.

▶ In the more than 25 years since this photo was taken, Carlota Ciganda has had the time and talent to further enhance an amateur record that is practically unique in Europe, and to achieve great success in the professional field: victories on the European Tour, on the LPGA, appearances in the Solheim Cup and in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,…

All these magnificent moments have a starting point, and that is Ulzama, Carlota's second home.

▶ “Of course I’m thrilled. Winning this championship is like a dream come true for me. The best part has been the support from the crowd, much more than I expected. Now I’m not thinking about anything else, just continuing to play at my own pace and trying to do my best,” Carlota said after her victory.
