Luis Masaveu, 22, arrived in Girona directly from the LIV golf tournament and has moved into a tie for the lead after starting the second round with a birdie. However, he struggled to maintain this pace as he didn't start at his best: “I had something for dinner last night that didn't agree with me, and I didn't sleep at all. I started out very, very tired. And as I progressed through the round, I felt more and more tired. I tried to hit the ball as well as I could, and the best thing about the day was finishing with a good birdie because, to be honest, I didn't play very well in the last six holes. The key was patience. Yesterday I started very well, today not so much, and I knew I had to be patient and wait because things would work out, and it did. I'm very happy to be here, in a good position, which is what I play and practice for. I need to have this same patience. I've played aggressively these past two days, and that's what I have to keep doing if I want to win. I came here to try to win. I love this tournament, especially since it's the Royal Spanish Golf Federation tournament,” Luis declared. Masaveu.
The Madrid golfer has signed for 67 strokes (-4) with five birdies and one bogey for a total of 131 strokes (-11) and shares first position with Oliver Gillberg, a Swedish player who comes from the Nordic league and has been a reserve in several tournaments this season, so the Challenge de España is the first one he plays.
The Nordic golfer opened the tournament with a 65 (-6) and today shot a 66 (-5), for a total of 131 (-11). “I teed off in the first group in cold and rain, which reminded me of the Nordic League—I'm used to this!—and I played quite well, making five birdies. Then the back nine was like playing on a completely different day, with sunshine. I slowed down a bit and only managed to make par, but I'm very happy. Yesterday I realized how much I missed competition, and I really enjoyed it. Last year I played in the Nordic League and got invitations to some Challenge Tour events. I think I'm ready now and can have a good season,” said Oliver Gillberg.
One stroke behind the leaders are Scotland's Euan Walker, who shot a 67 (-4), France's Clement Charmasson, and Denmark's Victor Sidal Svendsen, who carded a 69 (-2), for a total of 132 (-12). Two strokes back is Britain's Joshua Berry, currently ranked third on the Hotel Planner Tour and winner this year in Calcutta.
Javi Sainz from Bilbao, currently in seventh place, remains in contention for what would be his second victory on the HotelPlanner Tour. He held his own, shooting a 69 (-2) today for a total of 134 (-8). “It was a day quite similar to yesterday from tee to green. Perhaps I didn't have as many birdie opportunities today, but I played well. I think I've missed four greens over the two days, and I'm quite comfortable off the tee. It's a shame I didn't get them closer today. I've been hitting putts between 13 and 20 feet all day, which was a bit stressful. I was patient, though. I'm taking this with me. I sank a putt on the last hole that felt like heaven, so I'll keep going and see how the weekend goes. It's my first Challenge Tour event, so I have to make the most of every chance I get, and what better way to start than like this and build confidence?” explained Javi Sainz.
Today the cut in the classification has been established, which has been passed by a total of 77 players, among which are nine Spaniards, of which four are from the Pro Spain Team of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation: Luis Masaveu (-11), Javi Sainz (-8), Quim Vidal (-7); Joseba Torres (-6), Carlos Pigem (-5), Lucas Vacarisas (-4), Víctor Pastor (-3), Emilio Cuartero (-3) and David Borda (-3).
The Challenge Spain commemorated Europe Day
The Challenge of Spain has joined the celebration of Europe Day to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Schuman Declaration”, which proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, and which gave rise to what we know today as the European Union.
The Challenge de España is sponsored by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, with the support of the Higher Sports Council, the HotelPlanner Tour, the Catalan Golf Federation and Fontanals Golf Club, as well as AON, Allianz, Volvo, Halcón Viajes, Mahou-Solán de Cabras, Kyocera, the Fontanals de Cerdanya City Council, Max Ricart, Scalpers, Maximiliano Jabugo, Viñas Familia Gil and Titleist, under the organization of JGolf.
