This weekend, November 1st and 2nd, the 28th edition of the Spain-France Junior Match will take place, one of the oldest and most prestigious matches held annually in continental Europe, featuring the best golfers from both countries over the last three decades. The Hossegor Golf Course, in the French department of Landes, will host the event.
Spain is seeking its nineteenth title, and for this mission the RFEG's Youth Technical Committee (CTJ) has formed a team with the Andalusians Martín Cervera, Chanya Huaysan, Oliver de Wint and Manuel Martín, the Galician Jorge de la Riva, the Murcian Luna Isabella Valencia, and the Madrid natives Alejandra Hernández and Paula Puerta.
This Spanish team will be well accompanied by the President of the CTJ, Xisca Negre, and by the coaches Kiko Luna and Paola Etchart.
It should be emphasized that the team includes some of the most in-form Spanish players at the moment, starting with Martín Cervera, winner of the Reid Trophy, England Under 14 International, and one of the architects, along with Oliver de Wint, of the Spanish runner-up finish in The Amundi Evian Juniors Cup.
Furthermore, Chanya Huaysan is coming off a win at the Sergio García Junior Championship, and Oliver de Wint himself is the reigning Spanish Junior Champion. Both are strong credentials heading into what is always a tough match.
The competition rules stipulate that four foursomes will be played in the morning and another foursomes in the afternoon on the first day, and eight individual matches on the second day.
Good precedent for Spain
To date, the record of this Spain – France match is clearly in favor of the Spanish team, which has won eighteen of the twenty-six editions held since 1996. The record is completed with three draws (2002, 2005 and 2014) and four French victories (2003, 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2017).
Last year, Spain triumphed at the Real Club de Golf San Sebastián, one of the regular venues for the match, by a clear 10-6. This victory came after the forced cancellation, due to heavy rains, of the 2023 edition, which was to be played at Moliest Golf Club, also in the south of France.
