Shortly after crossing the thousand-day mark for the start of the competition, the 2023 Solheim Cup received another decisive boost by being declared an event of exceptional public interest by the Government of Spain, a designation recently published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on December 31, 2020, which is included in Law 11/2020 of the General State Budget.
This competition, which pits teams from the United States against those from Europe every two years and will be held for the first time in Spain in 2023 at the Finca Cortesín course, already enjoys significant corporate and institutional support, with PING, Costa del Sol, and Rolex as global partners, and Andalucía, Acosol, the Marbella City Council, and the Benahavís City Council as official partners. Its designation as an event of exceptional public interest, which it will hold for the next three years, significantly enhances its appeal, as companies and institutions sponsoring the competition can obtain a maximum tax deduction of up to 901% of their investments. This represents a considerable tax incentive in addition to the other benefits of sponsoring an event of this magnitude.
It is also noteworthy that this is the first women's golf event to be considered an event of exceptional public interest, a distinction that underscores the importance of this competition on the international stage.
Íñigo Aramburu, general manager of Sport & Business, emphasized the social driving force behind an event of the Solheim Cup's caliber.
“We are delighted and grateful to all parties involved for the well-deserved designation of the Solheim Cup as an event of exceptional public interest, an essential element that will contribute to the success of a project that will leave its mark on Spanish society and contribute to its recovery after the difficulties we have been experiencing in recent times. Women's golf is an ideal tool for transmitting the best values, and the recently approved tax incentives are a magnificent incentive for companies and entities interested in supporting this great tournament to see their efforts rewarded and become involved in a unique project.”.
The 2023 Solheim Cup joins the list of top-tier events with this designation, such as "Andalusia, European Region of Sport 2021," "Barcelona Mobile World Capital," "Valencia, World Design Capital 2022," and the "Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters," among others. The Solheim Cup clearly presents an opportunity to showcase Spain, Andalusia, and the Costa del Sol (with municipalities like Marbella, Benahavís, and Casares leading the way) as a safe tourist destination, while simultaneously supporting women's sport in a sustainable and internationally significant event.
The inaugural Solheim Cup was played in Florida in 1990 and is named after Karsten and Louise Solheim, founders of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, the company that markets the PING brand of golf equipment. The Solheim Cup pits two teams of twelve players, representing Europe and the United States, against each other in a three-day competition played in the same format as the Ryder Cup.
The 2023 Solheim Cup, officially hosted by Finca Cortesín, is sponsored by PING, Costa del Sol, and Rolex as global partners; and by Andalucía, Acosol, the Marbella City Council, and the Benahavís City Council as official partners. Solán de Cabras, Eversheds Sutherland Nicea, and the Casares City Council are official suppliers. Marca and Radio Marca are official media outlets. The LET, the LPGA Tour, the RFEG, and Deporte and Business are collaborating in its organization.
