The eighth edition of the Spanish Interclub Pitch & Putt Championship brings together 16 teams this weekend, September 29 and 30, at the Arenal de Noja Golf Club course (Noja, Cantabria), where the team representing the Escorpión Golf Club (Valencia) defends its title.
The Valencian team shares the spotlight in the preliminary round with Mataleñas, the 2017 winner. The previous champions - Costa de Azahar (2012 and 2013), Las Matas (2011) and Abra de Pas (2014) - are not represented this time.
The Mataleñas team boasts the lowest cumulative handicap in the tournament (2.4) and an almost identical lineup to the one that won in 2016, consisting of Raúl Toca, Jaime Herrera – winners of the 2018 World Pitch & Putt Doubles Championship – and Felipe Gómez. Carlos de Diego completes this trio.
Meanwhile, Escorpión (13.3) defends its title with only one of the players who led it to its first victory last year, José de la Concepción. Luis Lerma, Alma Betoret, and Carmela Simón are his teammates in this new endeavor.
Also noteworthy is the presence of the Masía de las Estrellas team (10.5), which arrives in Cantabria under the leadership of Thomas Artigas, who has the opportunity to add another title to a brilliant year in which he has won the San Marino and Italian Opens, and the II National Pitch & Putt Ranking Tournament. Álvaro Bertomeu, Pablo Puig, and David Bauxali are also part of the team.
The list of participating teams is completed by the teams of Deva Golf (14.1), Club de Campo Villa de Madrid (18.1), RCG Pedreña (18.2), Las Palmeras (19.7), RCG Castiello (20.8), La Junquera (27.9), Benalmádena Golf (29), CG El Arenal de Noja (34.1), CD Hidalgo (35.6), CG Torrepacheco (38.0), Guadalajara CG (38.9), Grijota Golf (47.2) and CD 5&3 (51.4).
In total, 64 golfers will gather at the mountain course, including some of those who have stood out the most in national Pitch & Putt events in recent years.
To add more appeal to the game, the tournament consists of three rounds with their own characteristics; the first is a fourball, the second a foursome and the third individual, counting only three of the four cards of each team.
A tournament with seven editions behind it
Seven editions have been held so far. The last one, in 2017, saw the Escorpión Golf Club team triumph with a total score of 346 strokes, eleven ahead of Club de Campo Villa de Madrid and fourteen ahead of the Masía de las Estrellas and Mataleñas teams.
In 2016, the Mataleñas team triumphed at the Green Paddock Golf course in Madrid. Starting as the leader on the final day of individual play, the Cantabrian team turned in a combined score of 164 strokes, allowing them to finish with a total of 372 strokes, five ahead of Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
A year earlier, in 2015, the Masía de las Estrellas team won brilliantly on their home course. With a very young Thomas Artigas in their ranks, the Alicante club triumphed by 21 strokes over the runner-up, El Bosque.
In 2014, the Abra del Pas team was crowned champion at the Mataleñas course in Cantabria, finishing four strokes ahead of the host team. Both teams carded 169 strokes in the second and final round, finishing with 502 and 506 respectively, leaving La Junquera in third place with 510.
In 2013, the Costa Azahar Golf Club team defeated the Escorpión Golf Club team in the final held in Sierra Cortina (Alicante). The two teams were repeating their 2012 final victory, which the Castellón team also won.
In the inaugural edition, the Las Matas team was crowned champion at the High-Performance Center. The Madrid team defeated Jarama-RACE in the grand final.
This competition was created in 2011, backed by the extraordinary participation recorded in Pitch & Putt tournaments in Spain, and by the outstanding results of the National Teams in the various events in which they have taken part.
The Spanish Interclub Championship was created by the Pitch & Putt Committee of the RFEG (Royal Spanish Golf Federation) to further promote a discipline with great appeal among Spanish golfers. Since the committee's creation in 2006, Pitch & Putt competitions have multiplied in Spain, resulting in the emergence of a large number of high-level golfers. Consequently, Spain is one of the leading powers in the sport on the continent.
