. The golfer from the Balearic Islands is in fourth position after delivering a spectacular 66 in the second round.
Spain's Nuria Iturrioz, with winning experience in the inaugural 2023 edition, has once again displayed her bright smile at La Sella Open, the tournament for women, the tournament with a million euros in prizes, where she occupies a hopeful fourth position as she reaches the halfway point of the competition.
Sixty-six wonderful strokes, 6 under par, on the second day, generated that joyful expression on his face in contrast to the dismayed gesture of the first round, when his actions did not culminate with the desired objective.
On this second occasion, the visible satisfaction took a considerable amount of time to materialize. Indeed, after eight holes his scorecard remained level, at even par, neither up nor down, a struggle against a course "that I like, but which is more complicated than it seems at first glance," he explained.
The golfer from the Balearic Islands calmly reviewed her performance at the clubhouse, but her mind, of course, went to the second part of her round, when the spark ignited and a volcanic explosion of good play came to light in all its rawness.
“It’s about patience, knowing how to wait for the right moment to take advantage of opportunities,” she said, becoming much more serious when asked how it was possible, after eight holes steeped in orthodoxy and academicism, for her game to transform into a whirlwind accumulation of successes.
There were, one after another, five consecutive birdies with an immediate consequence: from the middle of the leaderboard to the most noble and highest part, the one that allows you to compete head-to-head for the title with any of your rivals with 36 holes left to go.
Among them are players who have yet to win a title on the Ladies European Tour, with their entire future ahead of them, and others who already know the sweet taste of victory. In the first group, for example, is the French player Natasia Nadaud, who played well in both the first (66 strokes) and second (67) rounds.
Canadian Anna Huang is also a very special case, considering certain facts: only 16 years old and with only 14 professional tournaments played so far, but with a proven ability, at least during the first 36 holes, to challenge those with countless battles on their sporting resumes. A round of 64 and another of 66 make her a formidable opponent despite her lack of experience. Fourteen birdies and no bogeys is, for now, a devastating proposition.
Nuria Iturrioz, winner of the 2023 La Sella Open and four other Ladies European Tour tournaments, is a prominent figure in this whirlwind of success. These five victories explain why her radiant smile has become so prominent at the halfway point of this important tournament. She sits fourth, lurking eight strokes behind the leader, but her strategy is clear: “Of course I’m going for it all.”.
The Spanish women's haircut
The number of Spanish players in the competition, thirteen at the start, has been reduced to six when the cut was made on the second day at +3. Apart from Nuria Iturrioz, Blanca Fernández (even), Marta Martín (+1), the amateur Carolina López-Chacarra (+1), Luna Sobrón (+2) and Harang Lee (+2) have earned the right to play in the final two rounds.
Nuria Iturrioz and her five victories in the LET
“I don’t think about it, I focus on my own game, on doing my best. And if more victories come and I surpass that feat, then great,” said Nuria Iturrioz when it was revealed that her recent victory at the Aramco Houston Championship was her fifth Ladies European Tour title, just two fewer than Carlota Ciganda, the best Spanish golfer of all time.
Toñín Llorente, caddie for Carolina López-Chacarra
Spanish amateur Carolina López-Chacarra, invited to compete in the La Sella Open to gain experience in high-level tournaments before turning professional, had a unique caddie over the two days: former basketball player Toñín Llorente, a keen golfer. The pair remain in the competition after Carolina missed the cut following the second round, with a notable birdie on her final hole.
