The Spanish women's golden generation of golf is preparing to tackle a new milestone, the most demanding they have faced (and overcome) in recent years: winning the title at the Ladies World Team Championship, the Espirito Santo Trophy, which takes place from October 1st to 4th in Singapore. Spain has not won this tournament since 1986 and 1992.
The tournament is being held at the Tanah Merah CC course in the south of the Asian country, with 35 teams representing as many countries participating. Spain is traveling to Singapore with three players who have a brilliant recent track record, all three from Madrid: Paula Martín, Andrea Revuelta, and Carolina López-Chacarra, all of whom are ranked in the Top 15 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The delegation is completed by captain Covadonga Basagoiti, coach Álvaro Salto, and physiotherapist Álvaro Zerolo.
They form an ambitious group whose main objective is to win Spain's third gold medal. Difficult, very difficult, but not impossible. It's a dream they can dream of because these golfers have earned that right with brilliant performances. In 2025 alone, Paula Martín won the Women's Amateur Championship and the European Individual Championship, where Andrea Revuelta finished third. Both of them also came close to winning the title in the US Collegiate League with their team, Stanford University.
For her part, Carolina López-Chacarra, on the verge of turning professional, has just completed a remarkable performance in the prestigious US Women's Amateur 2025 and made the cut at La Sella Open, a Ladies European Tour tournament.
And even with all this, the most celebrated moment of the season for Paula, Andrea and Carolina was winning the European Team Championship in Paris as members of the Spanish team.
All teams participating in this World Championship will face each other over four days using the Stroke Play format, with only the two best daily results from each team being added together.
Good precedents for the Spanish trio
The United States – with fourteen victories – is the dominant force in the history of the Espirito Santo Trophy, although it is fair to mention that South Korea has been the main protagonist in the last two decades with its victories in 1996, 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2023. Australia and Sweden, with three titles each, and Spain, France and South Africa are the other countries that have won this tournament.
In the Spanish case, the victories occurred in Venezuela in 1986 and Canada in 1992. Macarena Campomanes, Mª Carmen Navarro and María Orueta –in the 1986 edition– and Macarena Campomanes, Estefanía Knuth and Laura Navarro in 1992 were the architects of those historic triumphs.
