The Meaztegi golf course in Ortuella is preparing for the big event of the year: the V Bizkaia PGAe Open, the fourth qualifying tournament of the III TUMI Spain Golf Tour circuit, which will be held from June 19 to 21.
The field of players is impressive, with around 146 registered. The massive response from professionals demonstrates the strong commitment of the PGAe community to a region that has proven to be a great host. The combination of a privileged natural environment, top-notch facilities, and institutional support from the Provincial Council and the community has made the 5th Bizkaia PGAe Open a benchmark event for both players and fans.
Once again, the Basque master José María Olazábal has confirmed his presence in the tournament, leading a national 'armada' with such illustrious names as Álvaro Quirós, Santi Luna, Carlos Balmaseda, Javier Colomo, David Borda, Carlos Suneson, Toño Hortal, and many more.
Olazábal had a standout performance this weekend, reaching third position on the American Champions Tour with two rounds of 67, although he ultimately finished in 22nd place. Almost all of the previous winners will also be present: Mario Galiano (2025), David Borda (2024), and Borja Martí (2023).
Also noteworthy is the presence of Joseba Torres, Olazábal's nephew; Manuel Ballesteros, Seve Ballesteros' nephew; and Eduardo Celles, who coached Jon Rahm in his early years; Daniel Berná, Pedro Oriol, and Emilio Cuartero. In addition, two women will follow in the footsteps of Amaia Latorre (the first professional to participate in Meaztegi): Fabiola de Céspedes and Ainhoa Jauregi. It's worth remembering that the national golf circuit is open to all PGA professionals, both men and women, who compete for the same prize on equal terms.
The tournament was born in 2022 as the most important event on the national golf scene, and after four editions, and with the participation of the best of national golf, including a winner of the Masters of Augusta, it has managed to consolidate itself as one of the most important tournaments on the national circuit.
Supported by the Spanish Professional Golfers' Association, which organizes the event, and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, one of the objectives of this tournament is to bring golf closer to fans, taking advantage of the magnificent design of Seve Ballesteros at Meaztegi, which is a publicly owned course and which in a short time has created a very important Children's School.
This tournament is promoted by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Meaztegi Golf, and the PGA of Spain. It would not be possible without the main sponsors: Inelco, Fermax, Game Telecomunicaciones, Grescrap, the Basque Golf Federation, the Bizkaia Golf Federation, Aelvasa, El Correo, Tele Bilbao, Radio Nervión, Pangea, Chef Lali, and the main sponsor of the PGA Tour, TUMI. Other sponsors include: Urbelan, Alkizabal, Gaimaz, Intxausti Construcciones, Boxify, Wilson, Bacalao Eguino, Titleist, FootJoy, Grupo Piérola, Larrondo Carpintería, Macallan, Last Dock, AFE, and Barceló Montecastillo.
