The 2024 Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship has come to a close at the Mistral Samaranch Golf Course (Colmenar Viejo, Madrid), with the celebration of the final day, played under the Canada Cup format, which was won by the pair formed by José Ángel Pérez and Fernando Agrelo.
This last round has meant a real turnaround in the standings, as none of the pairs that occupied the top three positions after the first day in which two rounds were played, one under Foursome mode and the other under Fourball mode, maintained their positions.
In the end, with a round of 100 strokes, José Ángel Pérez and Fernando Agrelo took the victory with a total of 199 strokes, two less than José María Ortiz de Pinedo and Fernando Cabezudo, who came in second.
Third place went to the duo of Miguel García and Sergio Vargas, who recorded the best round of the day with 99 strokes, but that result was not enough for them to reach higher levels.
A start marked by equality
The Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship began at the Mistral Samaranch Golf Course with the first day of competition, which as usual consisted of two rounds of 18 holes, one in Foursome format and the other in Fourball format, with a final round in Canada Cup format.
After the first 36 holes were completed, the predominant note was the great equality of the duos in the top positions, since the pair that reached the lead, the one formed by Félix Bolívar and José Domingo Osma, only obtained one stroke advantage over César Crespo and Diego Crespo, second, and two over Mario Rodríguez and Noel Calzadilla, third.
To take the provisional first place, the duo from Club de Campo Villa de Madrid delivered a first round of 51 strokes, and improved significantly in the second, with 41 strokes, for a total of 92 strokes.
Finally, it's worth highlighting the holes-in-one achieved during the tournament. On the first day, Miguel García, José Antonio González, and Diego Crespo each scored one on the 4th hole. On the second day, Mario Rodríguez joined this list, sinking the ball in a single stroke on the 17th hole. And César Fernández de Caleya did the same on the 8th hole during the third and final day.
Seventeen years of intense emotions
The Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship has now held its seventeenth edition, with this latest one just concluding. José Manuel Carretero, from the Canary Islands, played a prominent role in the first three editions, winning with two different partners. In the inaugural edition (2007), he partnered with Bernabé González, forming an ideal duo at Oasis Golf (Gran Canaria) to defeat María Castillo and Lucía Cortezo. In the following two editions, his partner was Pablo Montesdeoca, with whom he comfortably won two titles.
In 2010, the dominance of José Manuel Carretero was broken by the Galicians Javier Castillo and Francisco Sendón, who outscored the previous champions by twelve strokes at Barbanza Golf (La Coruña).
Since then, winners have come and gone, with only one pair managing to repeat their triumph: the Andalusian duo of Leonardo Axel Lilja and Antonio Pimentel, winners in the 2012 and 2013 editions. Also noteworthy is the golfer César Fernández de Caleya, who managed to win twice (2011 and 2018) with different partners.
