Jorge Campillo has added the fourth Spanish victory in the last five years by winning the prestigious Chiberta Grand Prix, which was held near Biarritz.
The player from Cáceres delivered a masterful final round, carding a 64 to take the lead (268) with a four-stroke advantage over his closest rival, Frenchman Mathieu Baroche. Of the rest of the Spanish contingent, Álvaro Velasco (5th) and Iñigo Urquizu (6th) were the highest-placed.
In the ladies' category, the winner was French player Melodie Bourdy (282), who secured her victory on the third day with a score of 68. Inés Díaz Negrete (291) finished in fifth place, becoming the highest-ranked Spanish player.
Jorge Campillo's title adds to the exceptional record of Spanish players over the last five years. It was in 2001 that Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño from Madrid won the title, a success repeated by Moisés Cobo from Seville in 2002, and then claimed again by a Spaniard, this time Iñaki Alustiza from the Basque Country, in 2003, when he finished two strokes ahead of Frenchman Julien Quesne.
