Spanish golf came within striking distance of completing the Grand Slam – winning all four majors – this Sunday at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania. Jon Rahm (-6) finished second in the US PGA Championship, a thrilling tournament that saw England's Aaron Rai (-9) claim his first major title.
In a tournament where under par was highly valued, Rai delivered a masterclass in golf and accuracy this Sunday to secure his most prized victory. Until now, his greatest accolade was two wins on the DP World Tour; from now on, he can boast a PGA Championship title, having won it by overcoming Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Ludvig Åberg in the final showdown. Thomas and Åberg were tied at -5 with American Alex Smalley, the leader at the start of the day, and German Matti Schmid.
Let's talk about Rahm. This PGA Championship has served to confirm that he's on the right track to win another major, and that's already great news. At Aronimink, the Basque golfer was solid once again – his rounds of 69, 70, 67, and 68 strokes speak for themselves – and showed a sharp edge that led him to co-lead after his birdies on the first two holes on Sunday.
However, he finished the first nine holes at even par, a result that kept him in contention for the win, but dependent on an external comeback. This furious and spectacular comeback (what a magnificent 21-meter putt on the 17th hole!) came from Aaron Rai, who at 31 years old experienced his greatest night of glory. Time will tell if it's the first of many.
David Puig takes another step forward in his career
The exciting conclusion of the tournament and Jon Rahm's involvement shouldn't overshadow the highly commendable performance of David Puig (T18, -1) at Aronimink. The Catalan golfer was a model of consistency, not shooting above 71 all week and closing the tournament with a 70, including sixteen par rounds. Puig has taken another step forward in his first appearance at the PGA Championship.
The third Spaniard in the competition was Ángel Ayora, who didn't seem fazed by his Grand Slam debut. He missed the cut on Friday, but showed glimpses of his talent. We'll see him in more tournaments of this caliber.
Carla Tejedo continues to make a strong impression on the LPGA.
Aside from the expected victories of Pablo Ereño and Alejandro Rodríguez on the HotelPlanner Tour and the Alps Tour, the weekend saw another outstanding week for Carla Tejedo (-4) on the LPGA. The golfer from Castellón finished twelfth at the Kroger Queen City Championship. So far, she has played seven tournaments and made five cuts on the LPGA Tour.
Carla Tejedo has gone from less to more until finishing with a great round of 68 strokes.
On the other hand, Luna Sobrón, fourteenth with -2, has been the best Spanish player in the Amundi German Masters and Teresa Toscano has missed the cut in the Copper Rock Championship, belonging to the Epson Tour.
