The 36th PGA of Spain Championship has begun with excitement at New Sierra Golf, the Murcia venue making its debut on the PGA of Spain calendar, which witnessed a spectacular first day. Ignacio Gómez Osuna took the lead after carding a 66 (-6), thus leading a championship that promises to be extremely close until the very end.
The golfer from Marbella shone from the very beginning, with a solid game off the tee and remarkable accuracy on the greens. “I found the course magnificent; it’s in perfect condition for competition, and what I liked most was the state of the greens: fast, firm, and very well maintained. Playing here is a real pleasure,” said Gómez Osuna after handing in his scorecard.
Behind him, just one stroke behind, are Gerard Piris Mateu, José Luis Adarraga Gómez, and Luis Manuel Portela Rial, all at -5, keeping the pressure on and guaranteeing an open and unpredictable tournament. Other names like Javier Sainz, the provisional leader of the Order of Merit, and David Borda, the reigning champion, also had a good start to stay in contention.
A field that tests the best
The New Sierra Golf course offered no respite. With fast greens and a narrow, demanding back nine, players had to be precise from the tee and maintain concentration on every shot. As Alfonso Buendía, a familiar face at the Murcia course, warned beforehand, “the par 3s are solid, the par 5s demand courage, and the back nine can feel very long if the wind picks up.” And today, with favorable conditions, the course allowed those who were more aggressive to shine, although it doesn't forgive mistakes.
New Sierra Golf, hosting this championship for the first time following an agreement signed with the PGA of Spain for the next three years, is establishing itself as a leading venue for professional golf. Its fairways, free from urban development and surrounded by nature and tranquility, are providing the perfect setting for a championship that brings together nearly one hundred players.
Murcia, a key player in national golf
The arrival of the championship in Murcia represents another step in establishing the Region as a golf destination. The president of the PGA of Spain, Ander Martínez, already highlighted this at the official presentation: “It is essential to include challenging courses like this one on the circuit, which prepare players to compete at the highest international level.” For her part, Andrea Pascual, Marketing and Communications Director of New Sierra Golf, described the event as “a great opportunity to grow as a club and to showcase the potential of the Region of Murcia as a sporting destination.”.
