If you ask any amateur golfer about the warm-up they do before playing 18 holes for pleasure or in a competition, most would answer: "What for? I've hit balls, what does that consist of?".
A small minority would answer, "Yes, I did a short warm-up before going out to play," while others would say, "Yes, I did a short warm-up and then hit a few balls." Finally, in the professional world, almost every player understands that they need to be like the last group of amateurs: warm up and then hit some balls.
Warm-up, or in its Anglo-Saxon terminology, what is it? What does it consist of?
A warm-up is defined as the period of preparatory exercises performed before a competition or training session. Its purpose is to prepare the body both physically and mentally for the activity and to reduce the risk of injury.
