The European Under 18 Men's Team Championship 2nd Division has concluded with the grand final, in which Spain and Italy faced each other, at the Hungarian course of Zala Springs Golf Resort.
The final match of the tournament did not disappoint the expectations created and showed why both teams were the two best during the four days of the championship.
In the first match, the foursomes, the teams were evenly matched, with each side winning one of the two matches. The Italians Giampaolo Gagliardi and Simone Cavaliere gave the Spaniards Iván Enguita and Gonzalo Baños no chance, winning 6-4, while the Spaniards Jorge Sánchez and Jorge Martín leveled the score by defeating Carlo Melgrati and Carlo Roman.
With that first tie on the scoreboard, the individual matches arrived, where the Italians won three and lost two, that is, greater equality is impossible.
The Spanish victories were achieved by Raúl Gómez and Jorge Sánchez, after beating Carlo Roman and Giovani Bernadi by 2up and 3/2 respectively, while Yago Horno, Jorge Martín and Gonzalo Baños succumbed to Bruno Frontero, Giampaolo Gagliardi and Simone Cavaliere by scores of 2/1 and a double 1up.
In short, the Spanish team has not managed to win this Under 18 Men's Second Division European Team Championship due to small details, but the most important thing is that they have achieved their main objective, which was none other than to move up to the First Division, especially considering that next year this tournament will be held in Spain.
Spain reached the final after defeating Slovakia
The European Under 18 Men's Team Championship 2nd Division continued its development in Hungarian soil with the direct confrontations that formed the two finalists.
In the previous phase, Spain finished in second place, only behind Italy, which meant that they would face Slovakia in the quarterfinals, a match that went to Spain by a clear 5.5–1.5.
The Spanish team secured their victory against the Slovakian team by winning both Foursomes matches with the pairs Jorge Sánchez and Jorge Martín, and Yago Horno and Raúl Gómez, with identical results: 2-1.
Then, in the singles matches, Spain didn't let their guard down and won their first two matches, with Yago Horno and Jorge Martín winning 3-2 and 4-3, respectively, thus securing their victory. Consequently, the remaining three matches, which had no bearing on the final result, ended in draws.
This victory for Spain took them directly to the final, where they faced the Italian team, after the Italians defeated Iceland 5-2.
Thus, the teams that finished first and second in the first phase faced each other in the final match of this European Under 18 Men's Team Championship 2nd Division.
