The Spanish men's team has successfully defended its title at the 2025 European Mid-Amateur Team Championship, which concluded at Empordá Golf (Girona) after four days of superb golf. The team, captained by Ion Ander Corral, defeated Germany 2-1 in the final, which was reduced to three matches. The women's team, meanwhile, finished in fifth place.
This time, the hero of the day wasn't Nicolás Evangelio, who had been instrumental in the previous three matches; the player from La Rioja couldn't secure a point against Cedric Otten, who won 3-2. The key to the final lay in the composure and accuracy of the other three team members at crucial moments.
Moisés Cobo and Alberto Domínguez, a well-established and reliable pair, won the foursome on the 21st hole. That point was crucial, as a German victory would have secured the trophy for them in Berlin. Everything then hinged on the match between Ignacio de Pineda and Christopher Dammert, which the Catalan player won on the 18th hole.
With this prestigious victory, Spain consolidates its dominance in the category: two editions and two wins with eight different golfers. This last point is worth highlighting.
Spain reached the grand final by defeating Ireland (3-2) on Friday in a tie where the morning proved decisive. Both points went to Spain in the foursomes: first, the Andalusian duo of Moisés Cobo and Alberto Domínguez comfortably secured their point (4/3), and then Nicolás Evangelio and Ignacio de Pineda finished off the morning by winning on the 18th hole. With a 2-0 lead, the afternoon looked very different.
The individual matches were fiercely contested, with Irishmen David Reddan and Gerard Dunne taking the initiative in their matches against Moisés Cobo and Alberto Domínguez, respectively. Following the unfolding of these matches, one had to watch the golfing battle between Nicolás Evangelio and Colm Campbell, and the player from La Rioja, who had become the team's hero this week, sealed their passage to the semifinals by sinking a one-meter putt on the 20th hole.
Fifth place for the Spanish women's team
The Spanish women's team, meanwhile, finished in fifth place, one position higher than last year. They were scheduled to play Switzerland for that fifth place on Saturday, but the match was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
It's worth remembering that in Friday's session, Spain, who were just one birdie away from playing for medals in the qualifying round, achieved a clear and decisive victory against Finland (3-0). First, Andrea Noriega and Irene Rollán won a foursome on the 18th hole, managing it well with narrow leads, and later Ane Urchegui (5/4) and Alicia Fajardo (3/2) closed out the tie.
Thus, the new victory of the men's team and the fifth place of the women's team allow the Spanish teams to close the tournament with a fantastic feeling.
