The Swiss players won two matches on the 18th hole: the foursome and the match between Karin Luxon and Natalia Fernández Reboredo. Soledad Fernández de Araoz, in her match against Geraldine Dondit (4/3), couldn't prevent the Swiss from taking the third and decisive point of the day. The victories of María Castillo (4/3) and Macarena Campomanes (1up) were ultimately in vain.
The title went to the French team, who defeated Ireland 4-1 in the grand final.
5th-8th PLACE: Narrow victory against Sweden
Spain bounced back from their quarter-final defeat with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sweden, built on the strength of their individual matches. The first two points went to the Swedes, who won the foursome (5/4) and the match between Annika Mortimer and Macarena Campomanes (5/3), but Spain staged a comeback thanks to points from Soledad Fernández de Araoz (2up), Natalia Martínez Reboredo (1up), and María Castillo (hole 19).
QUARTER-FINALS: Spain loses to England and is eliminated from medal contention
Spain was eliminated from medal contention after losing in the quarterfinals, the first round of the knockout stage, to England (3.2-1.5). Spain came into the match with high hopes after their impressive comeback in the second qualifying round, but England secured their place in the semifinals, proving very effective at crucial moments. This was especially true in the foursome, which was decided on the 19th hole after a remarkable effort from María de Orueta and Mercedes Gómez to level the score.
Macarena Campomanes won her point convincingly (5/3), but the tie went to the British side with the defeats of Soledad Fernández de Araoz (3/2) first, and Natalia Martínez Reboredo (2 up) later. María Castillo's match, which had leveled from 4 down, was rendered meaningless.
Let's remember that Macarena Campomanes, María de Orueta, Soledad Fernández de Araoz, María Castillo, Natalia Martínez-Reboredo, and Mercedes Gómez, all captained by Rocío Ruiz de Velasco, have made up the Spanish team. It's worth noting that the first five golfers already led Spain to the title in 2023 and before that in 2021, precisely on the same Bulgarian course.
The team advanced through the qualifying phase, which consisted of two rounds, finishing in second place, just behind France. A near-perfect second day allowed Spain to jump from seventh place.
