Spain achieved a historic victory against France in the first international Pitch & Putt tournament in which the Spanish team has participated, held at the Grande Motte Golf Club in Montpellier. The team, captained by Milagros Candela, overcame their rivals on the first playoff hole after finishing the two days of competition tied with 8 points.
María Castillo was, at that culminating moment, the architect of the Spanish victory by beating Nils Reaume on that decisive hole, the two players designated by the captains to decide this first International Pitch & Putt Match in history in which the Spanish team takes part.
Made up of Alberto Campos, Juan Rodríguez, José Ángel Pérez, Óscar Sánchez, Humberto Ordosgoitia, Juan Carlos Pérez, Alfonso Legaz and María Castillo, the Spanish team took the initiative in the competition during the doubles matches, eight matches resolved with two wins and two draws under the fourball modality and two wins and two losses under the foursome modality.
With the score at 5-3 in favor of the Spanish team, the second day unfolded the individual matches, a head-to-head between all participants where a powerful French reaction was staged, cut short at the last moment by María Castillo, the current Spanish Pitch & Putt champion.
The golfer from the Canary Islands earned an important tie in her clash against Nils Reaume just before they faced each other in the tiebreaker playoff, a decisive moment in which the Spanish player proved more accurate.
