CAMPEONATO DE EUROPA INDIVIDUAL MASCULINO 2025

Ciento cuarenta y cuatro jugadores procedentes de todo el continente optan al título en el Campeonato de Europa Individual Masculino 2025, que se celebra del 25 al 28 de junio en el recorrido sueco de Vasatorps Golfklubb, al sur del país. Entre ellos, cinco de los mejores golfistas españoles de la actualidad, cuyo objetivo es emular a los dos únicos de nuestros representantes que han ganado este torneo, los castellonenses Sergio García y José Luis Ballester.

La delegación española está encabezada por el madrileño Álvaro Pastor, que afronta la prueba en un notable momento de forma que le ha rendido importantes frutos en las dos últimas semanas: primero se erigió en campeón de España Absoluto y, posteriormente, fue el mejor de los nuestros en el prestigioso The Amateur.

Los otros cuatro españoles en competición son otros dos madrileños, ⁠Jaime Montojo y ⁠Sergio Jiménez, el barcelonés ⁠Alejandro de Castro y el onubense ⁠Yago Horno, que pese a ser el más joven de todos acredita dos victorias relevantes en 2025, en la Copa puerta de Hierro y en el Campeonato de España Sub 18. Salvador Luna está al frente de la parcela técnica de la expedición.

Biennial in the first three competitions held in 1986, 1988 and 1990, and annual since then, the country that has registered the most names in its list of winners has been England thanks to the success of Jim Payne (1991), Matthew Richardson (2004), Ashley Chesters (2013 and 2014) and Alfie Plant (2017).

Suecia, Francia, Dinamarca, Irlanda e Italia, con cuatro triunfos, siguen en un listado reservado también a Alemania (3), España y Austria (2), Noruega, Bélgica, Gales y Escocia, las cuatro con una victoria.

La defensa del título recae en Tommy Morrison, que lidera una importante representación estadounidense.  

The competition consists of four 18-hole rounds, the last of which is reserved only for the top 60 and ties after the third round.

Following in the footsteps of Sergio and Josele

For many years, Sergio Garcia was the only Spanish player to win the title: he was the winner in 1995 and runner-up in 1997, almost achieving the feat later accomplished by the aforementioned Englishman Ashley Chesters – the best in 2013 and 2014 – and the German Matthias Schmid, first ranked in 2019 and 2020, the only ones who have won twice in the increasingly long history of this Men's Individual European Championship.

Twenty-eight years later, the victory once again fell to another Spaniard, José Luis Ballester, who in 2023 dominated the tournament held at the Estonian course of Pärnu Bay Golf Links from start to finish. The player from Castellón, very solid in the final round, withstood the attacks of Dane Mads Laage and Welshman James Ashfield, who tied for second place with two strokes more than the Spaniard.

In the Spanish sphere, Álvaro Prat (1991), Pablo Martín (2003), Rafael Cabrera (2005), Borja Queipo de Llano (1988) and David Morago (2013) also made very meritorious performances at the time, finishing second in their respective editions.
