The Spanish Men's Pitch & Putt Championship celebrates a special twentieth edition this weekend, May 17th and 18th. It does so in top form, with an overwhelming number of participants—ninety players and a long waiting list—and at one of Spain's leading courses for this discipline of golf, Golf Paderne (Betanzos, A Coruña).

The absence of the defending champion, Prakash Aisa, is more than compensated for by the participation of many of the golfers who have brought prestige to national Pitch & Putt in these two decades: from the Canary Islander Bernabé González (exact handicap 0.7), winner in the 2017 and 2023 editions, to his countryman César Fernández de Caleya (2), winner this year of the Spanish Mid Amateur Championship.

There are many players who fall into this category: César Crespo (1.8), who comes from winning in Torre-Pacheco (Murcia); Daniel Varela (+2.2), José María Ortiz de Zárate (+0.8), Jesús Soler (0.8), Jesús Casajús (1.7),… and, of course, a double winner of the tournament (2008 and 2021) such as the Galician José Ángel Pérez (+0.8), winner this same year in the Doubles together with Fernando Agrelo.

This competition is played over 54 holes in Scratch Stroke Play format over two consecutive days: 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second. Bodegas Habla, the tournament sponsor, will award one of its prized Magnum wines to the golfers who achieve a hole-in-one during the competition.

Leonardo Axel Lilja, great dominator of the record

The tournament's record, currently comprising eighteen titles, is dominated by Leonardo Axel Lilja from Andalusia, who secured his third consecutive victory in 2015 at the Panorámica Golf Club (Castellón). This win put him ahead of another Andalusian golfer who, like Lilja, has also achieved significant results on the long course: Marcos Pastor from Córdoba, winner of the 2010 edition – in which he was also the Spanish National Champion and Pitch & Putt Champion – and the 2011 edition.

In recent years, the following have been added:

2021 to this exclusive group of repeaters achieving their second title José Ángel Pérez, Bernabé González and Prakash Aisa.

Six events make up the National Ranking

The 2025 National Pitch & Putt Ranking consists of six events: the Spanish Individual Championships and the four National Qualifying events.

The Spanish Women's Championship will take place on October 25th and 26th at Golf Elche, while two National Ranking tournaments have been played to date, with victories for Carlos Vega and César Crespo. The tournaments at La Junquera Golf (Cantabria, June 14th-15th) and Las Encinas Golf (Madrid, September 20th-21st) remain to be played.
