Thirty-five teams take part, on August 29 and 30, in the forty-fourth edition of the Spanish Interclub Junior Championship at its usual venue of recent years, the Lauro Golf course (Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga), which these days has become a festival of youth golf.

Many interesting facts surround the event: a total of 150 golfers will participate, including four of the six players crowned Spanish champions in Murcia just two months ago: Sofía Gamilla, Sergio Vargas, Inés Gómez-Balboa, and Paula Casas; the Cadiz team from La Cañada, which also boasts the lowest cumulative handicap (1.2), will defend its title…

This week highlights the excellent work being done by clubs with their youth academies. Leading the list of participants is the aforementioned team from La Cañada, led by two-time Spanish Junior Champion Sofía Gamilla and Pedro Tineo, two of the key players in last year's victory.

La Cañada is one of the leading golf schools in Spain, as are Manises (7.5), Costa de Azahar (8.5), the RSHECC (11.6) or Retamares (14.4), which follow it in the list and promise to put up a fight this weekend.

In addition to the aforementioned Spanish champions, it is worth noting that the tournament will bring together players who have had impressive careers in their still short trajectories: Graciliano Ballesteros, Andrea Arnal, Lucas Barra, Álvaro Mateu, Eduardo de la Macorra, Daniela Lozano,…

Each team consists of two boys and two girls under 15 years of age, all holding a national handicap and having been members of their respective clubs for at least one year. Each member of each team plays 18 holes daily in stroke play format. The seven best scores from the eight rounds played over the two days count towards the final score. The club with the lowest combined score wins the title.

The other teams present this weekend at Lauro Golf are the following: Guadalmina, Basozabal, Sant Cugat, Guadalhorce, RACE, Puerta de Hierro, Aranjuez, Madrid Federation Golf School, La Peñaza, El Prat, Altorreal, Castiello, Vista Hermosa, Laukariz, Lauro Golf, RCG San Sebastián, Arruzafa, Torrepacheco, La Dehesa, Zarauz, Neguri, Escorpión, Larrabea, National Golf Center, Villa de Madrid, La Herrería, Las Brisas, Sotogrande, Alenda and Meaztegi.

Dominance of the RCG San Sebastián

The record of this prestigious tournament reflects the dominance of RCG San Sebastián, with eleven victories – the last two in 2005 and 2006 – followed by RCG Las Palmas and Costa de Azahar, which have each won five times. Special mention goes to the Castellón club, which has triumphed in four of the last twelve editions, most recently in 2017 with José Luis Ballester, Carla Bernat, José Luis Ventura, and Rocío Tejedo.

Guadalmina, for its part, has finished first three times, while Terramar, Club de Campo de Málaga, RSHECC, and Escorpión have each won twice. The list is completed by the single victories, so far, of CC Villa de Madrid, Pineda, RCG Tenerife, Zuasti, Ulzama, Vallromanes, Can Cuyás, Mogro, Basozábal, Goiburu, RCG La Herrería, El Bosque, and Vista Hermosa.

Torrequebrada and Guadalhorce, an important part of the tournament's history

Torrequebrada and Real Guadalhorce Golf Club have traditionally been the two clubs that hosted this vibrant competition, with Lauro Golf taking over in recent years.

From 1979 to 2000, this beloved tournament was held at the Torrequebrada Golf Club, also in Málaga. In the following four years, between 2007 and 2015, and again in 2017, Guadalhorce took over the competition, which during those years also traveled to Atalaya (2005), Almenara (2006), and Lauro Golf (2016), which has been the venue since 2018—with the exception of the 2020 cancellation due to the pandemic.
