The Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship takes place this weekend, May 16th and 17th, at the Compostela Golf course in Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña. The tournament is celebrating its nineteenth edition at a fantastic time, with overwhelming participation and a host of top-level players.
Forty-six pairs are participating in this important event, including the defending champions, the Galician duo of José Ángel Pérez and Fernando Agrelo (cumulative handicap 4.6), winners of the last two editions. Having been unbeatable first at Golf Mistral Samaranch (Madrid) and then at Bil Bil (Málaga), they will need to perform at a similar level to retain the coveted trophy.
The list of participants includes a host of exceptionally talented pairs. Among them are the Galician duos Martín Rosende and Simón Varela (+1.8) and Simón and Antón Gómez (2.7), the Valladolid pair José María Ortiz de Pinedo and Samuel Nieto (3.7), and the Canary Islanders César Fernández de Caleya and Bernabé González (5.6).
In addition, the tournament features other illustrious names in this specialty of golf in Spain: Jesús Casajús, Marcos Gómez, César Crespo, Noel Calzadilla,…
The competition format establishes the contest of 54 holes over two consecutive days: 18 under the Foursome modality, another 18 under the fourball modality and another 18 under the Canada Cup modality.
And once again, Bodegas Habla is sponsoring the competition, giving away a valuable Magnum to players who achieve a hole-in-one on both days.
Eighteen years of intense emotions
The Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship has been held eighteen times to date. José Manuel Carretero, from the Canary Islands, played a prominent role in the first three editions, winning with two different partners. In the inaugural edition (2007), he partnered with Bernabé González, forming an ideal duo at Oasis Golf (Gran Canaria) to defeat María Castillo and Lucía Cortezo. In the following two editions, his partner was Pablo Montesdeoca, with whom he comfortably won two titles.
In 2010, the dominance of José Manuel Carretero was broken by the Galicians Javier Castillo and Francisco Sendón, who outscored the previous champions by twelve strokes at Barbanza Golf (La Coruña).
Since then, the winners have come and gone, with only two pairs managing to repeat their victory: the Andalusian duo of Leonardo Axel Lilja and Antonio Pimentel, winners in 2012 and 2013, and the aforementioned José Ángel Pérez and Fernando Agrelo, winners in the last two editions. Also noteworthy is golfer César Fernández de Caleya, who has won twice (2011 and 2018) with different partners.
