The Men's and Women's Amateur Technical Committees of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation have selected the 6 golfers who will represent Spain in the upcoming Mediterranean Games, whose golf competition, both Individual and Team, will take place at the Mediterranean Village Golf Course, in Almería, between June 27 and 30.
The selected players are as follows:
Male Category
José Luis Adarraga, Jordi García del Moral and Ignacio Sánchez Palencia
Female Category
Adriana Zwanck, María Hernández and Belén Mozo
All of them amateurs, they boast impressive track records. This is the case of José Luis Adarraga from A Coruña, Spanish Cadet Champion in 1999, gold medalist at the European Under-16 Team Championships in 1999 and current Spanish University Champion, with numerous good results in recent tournaments reflecting his excellent form.
Jordi García del Moral, from Castellón, is a regular member of the national teams, with whom he won the bronze medal in the Junior World Team Championship in 2003 and the Junior European Team Championship in 2004, in addition to individually adding the 2004 Spanish Junior International to his list of achievements.
Ignacio Sánchez Palencia, from Granada, has also been a regular member of the national teams in recent years. He won the Spanish Junior International in 2000, the Landes Grand Prix in 2003, and the Mexican International Pairs Championship in 2004.
In the women's category, Spain will be represented by Adriana Zwanck from Madrid, who has just been proclaimed Absolute and Junior Champion of Spain at the Real Club de Golf El Prat after overcoming María Hernández from Navarre in an exciting final, who was also called up for the Mediterranean Games.
Adriana Zwanck's record includes the Spanish Championships Benjamin 1996, Alevín 1998 and the aforementioned Absolute and Junior 2005, apart from the prestigious International of Spain Female 2003 and the gold medals in the European Team Championships Under-16 2002, Under-18 2002 and Absolute 2003.
María Hernández, for her part, presents in her record the Spanish Individual Championship 2003, the Under-18 category in 2004, the Under-16 European Individual Championship 2002, as well as 4 gold medals in various European Team Championships (Under-16 2002; Under-18 2002; Absolute 2003 and Junior 2004) apart from the prestigious Doral Junior Publix Classic 2001 in the United States.
They will both be accompanied by Belén Mozo from Cádiz, the current Spanish Under-18 champion, who has also won in her short but prolific sporting career the Spanish Children's Championship 2002, the Doral Publix Junior Classic 2004 and The Thunderbird International Junior 2004 –both in the United States– and the gold medals in the European Under-16 Team Championships 2003 and 2004 and Under-18 2003.
Luis Méndez, as captain, and Salvador Luna, as coach, complete the Spanish expedition in these 2005 Mediterranean Games.
The Spanish representatives are aiming to win the titles at stake. The individual title will go to the player with the lowest total score over the four days of competition. Simultaneously, the team competition is held, in which the two best results from each round in each category are used to determine the final standings.
Spain's participation in the Mediterranean Games, in the discipline of Golf, has so far resulted in a total of 21 medals, 4 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze, as detailed below:
