. “Some of the players were already at this club during their amateur days, and it’s wonderful to see them back here a few years later,” says club president Luis Hualde, referring to the historic event for the Navarrese club.

The Castillo de Gorraiz Golf Club will host the Santander Spanish Women's Professional Championship from July 16th to 18th, one of the most prestigious competitions on the national calendar. The Navarrese course will make its debut as the venue for the championship and also as a host of a Santander Golf Tour event, bringing together 35 players, ten of them amateurs, in a week that will mark a milestone in the club's history.
Two Spanish champions lead the field in this year's tournament. On one hand, reigning two-time champion Ana Peláez, winner in 2014 and 2015, will be looking to claim her third consecutive title. On the other, Luna Sobrón faces a historic opportunity. The Balearic Islander currently shares the record for most wins in the competition with three titles, achieved between 2018 and 2020, tied with Tania Elósegui and Natalia Escuriola. A victory in Gorraiz would make her the only player to achieve four national crowns.
The level of competition will once again be guaranteed with the presence of several regulars from the Ladies European Tour such as Marta Martín, Blanca Fernández, Harang Lee, Marta Sanz or Amaia Latorre, in addition to outstanding players from the national scene such as María Herráez, winner of the Santander Golf Tour ranking in 2024; Clara Moyano, winner of the Order of Merit in 2021; or Ana Pina, recent champion of the Santander Golf Tour Álava played at the Larrabea Golf Club.
Luis Hualde, the club's president, emphasizes the importance of the event for the organization: "The club has traditionally organized quite a few Spanish Championships in different categories, including individual, inter-regional, and similar events. No professional championships have been held here in the club's more than 30 years. It's wonderful to be able to host this championship.".
The Navarrese leader also believes the tournament will allow many players to reconnect with those already familiar with the club from their youth. "This is another step forward in the quality of players we'll see compared to previous championships, although we can't forget that some of them were already part of this club during their amateur days, and it's great to see them back here a few years later," he explains.
From a sporting perspective, Hualde believes the course will offer an interesting challenge for the participants. "At the professional level, players are able to quickly grasp the course layout and develop game strategies. They'll do so perfectly during the practice round and the Pro-Am, but be careful with the greens; many holes have pin positions where strategy is crucial," she points out.
The excitement surrounding hosting the championship is shared by the entire club, which is already preparing to welcome players, coaches, families, and fans. "They will be received with great enthusiasm in Gorraiz, and we will do everything we can to make everyone feel at home. There can only be one winner, but we hope everyone takes away wonderful memories," Hualde concludes.
The arrival of the Santander Spanish Women's Professional Championship will allow the country's best professionals to compete at Castillo de Gorraiz for the first time. This debut is eagerly anticipated by both the club and the players, who will find in the Navarrese course a new stage on which to fight for one of the most prestigious titles in Spanish women's golf.
