The golf ball, one of the essential elements for playing this sport, has changed substantially throughout history. Ignacio Gervás, Technical Director of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, reviews the curious evolution of the ball, which has been very different over the centuries.

From those smooth, difficult-to-control wooden balls, to the heavier, feather-filled Feathery ball, the development of golf balls was marked by finding the right materials to extend their durability and, above all, to increase their control during flight.

Thus emerged, around 1850, the Guttie ball, made with rubber resin from India, with the first drawings and stripes on its surface, and the Haskell ball, at the beginning of the 20th century, the first ball that could be described as modern, already with the typical alveoli on its surface, before reaching the current ball, made with more sophisticated materials.
