El deporte del golf consiste en jugar una bola con un palo desde el lugar de salida hasta el interior del agujero mediante un golpe o sucesivos golpes conforme a las Reglas de Golf.

Las principales modalidades de juego son las siguientes:

Match Play
Es una de las dos modalidades que normalmente se emplean en las competiciones profesionales. Se juega por hoyos. Gana el hoyo quien lo haya hecho en menos golpes que su rival y no es imprescindible acabar de meter la bola en el hoyo (vale el putt dado). Se lleva la cuenta acumulando los hoyos ganados y restando los perdidos y se suele decir que un jugador va tantos arriba o tantos abajo. Acaba el partido cuando un competidor lleva más hoyos ganados que hoyos quedan por finalizar la vuelta. (Ej.: 4/3). Esta fórmula se utiliza en las competiciones por eliminatorias y en los partidos por equipos.

Medal Play
Es el juego por golpes, la otra de las dos modalidades mas extendidas. Gana el jugador que realice la ronda en el menor número de golpes. Juegan todos contra todos. Es la fórmula habitual en torneos profesionales y premios de un día.

Stableford
Stableford is a scoring system where each hole is awarded points relative to par: 1 point for a bogey, two for par, three for a birdie, and four for an eagle. If a player cannot finish the hole within the number of strokes required for scoring, they pick up their ball. It is the only system where the player with the highest total wins. Stableford is currently very popular in local tournaments because it is faster than other systems and allows players to pick up their ball.

Mejor Bola (Fourball)
It's a typical friendly match. Four players, each playing their own ball. On each hole, the lowest score from each side counts. The player with the best score wins, and scoring is done by hole, just like in match play.

Greensome
A doubles format where both players tee off on each hole, choose the best-placed shot (the other is collected), and continue playing it alternately until the hole is finished. It is widely used in club competitions.
