Spanish golf has experienced an increase of 3,100 licenses during the past two months, an increase that puts the total at 310,772 as of July 1 and that highlights the activity of this sport in Spain.

This figure represents an increase of 1% compared to the last official count carried out last May, a growth that partially mitigates the decline in members experienced since the beginning of the year, when the number of licenses stood at 326,905, a little over sixteen thousand more than the current figures once the annual cancellations have been made, in percentage terms a 4.9% less as a consequence of the economic crisis that affects the whole of Spanish society.

It should be noted that all the Autonomous Communities – except the Autonomous City of Melilla, with a very slight decrease – have experienced increases in the number of registered members during the months of May and June, a measure that reflects the movement generated by golf throughout Spain.

By Autonomous Communities, Madrid, with almost 92,000 licenses, leads the ranking followed by Andalusia –almost 48,000–, Catalonia –just over 37,500– and the Valencian Community, with more than 21,000.

Special mention should also be made of the Basque Country – almost 20,000 –, Castile and León – close to 17,000 members –, Galicia and Asturias, beyond 11,500 and 10,000 licenses respectively, the Autonomous Communities that also have five digits in their number of members.

Remember that in 1990 there were barely 45,000 players in Spain, the 100,000 mark was surpassed in 1996, 200,000 were registered in the first months of 2002, in mid-2004 there were 250,000 and at the end of 2006 the mythical barrier of 300,000 registered players was surpassed.
