José Manuel Carretero and Pablo Montesdeoca from the Canary Islands have been proclaimed Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Champions at the Las Palmeras Golf Island Course, where they took advantage of the discreet second round of their closest rivals in the standings to win a second edition of a high level.
José Manuel Carretero, winner of this championship in its inaugural edition alongside Bernabé González, found in Pablo Montesdeoca an effective and worthy partner who performed at virtually the same level. Between them, they totaled 215 strokes, seven less than the next-place pair. This pair consisted of fellow Canary Islanders Lucía Cortezo – the current Spanish Individual Pitch & Putt Champion – and Paola González.
This second edition of the Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship saw a larger field than last year, intensifying the already fierce competition at Oasis Golf. In fact, the first round ended with Galicians Rubén Anllo and Yago Lorenzo in the lead with 106 strokes, followed by José Manuel Carretero and Pablo Montesdeoca with 107, and three other pairs with 109. The two Galician players didn't have their best day on the second round, finishing with 224 strokes, which resulted in a third-place finish that they ultimately shared with Eustaquio Rodríguez and Antonio Esteban.
The winning pair succeeds José Manuel Carretero and Bernabé González, who were the first to win the championship last year. The Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship, especially after this 2008 edition, has quickly become one of the most popular events among fans of this golf discipline. The presence of the last four Spanish Individual Champions, both male and female – Rubén Anllo, María Castillo, José Ángel Pérez Reñones, and Lucía Cortezo – attests to this.
