The Andalusian golfer, trained at the La Cañada Club in San Roque, is just one step away from making history in the V Bizkaia PGAe Open, which is being played at the Meaztegi golf course in Ortuella, the fourth qualifying tournament of the III TUMI Spain Golf Tour circuit.
Mario Galiano carded a flawless second round of 64, with eight birdies and no bogeys, to take the sole lead at 133 (-11), just one round away from making history at Meaztegi and becoming the first two-time winner of this national 'Major' on the PGA Tour. Number 1 in the 2014 European Amateur Ranking, Mario won last year's tournament after tying at -10 with Pedro Oriol, whom he defeated on the first playoff hole.
His first professional victory was in 2016 on the Gecko Tour, a circuit that traveled through Andalusia. But it is on the PGA circuit where he has forged his record, with victories in the TUMI Final at Panorámica Golf in 2015, the same year he won the Meaztegi tournament; and at the beginning of this season, he triumphed, along with Asier Aguirre, in the Izki Doubles tournament.,
Juan Salama, from CC Villa de Madrid and a regular on the national circuit, is one stroke behind the leader. He won the 33rd PGA of Spain Championship in 2021. He also competes on the Madrid Professional Circuit, where he has already secured two victories, and this year he won the Egypt Golf Series on the Mena Tour, his first international title. Salama carded the best round of the day with a 63, 10 birdies that would have tied Borja Martín's record, but he made a bogey on the 14th hole.
Marc Sabriá and Gonzalo Leal share third place at -9, followed by Sigot López and Alvaro Fernández Cabezuela in fifth, one stroke behind. The standings are very tight, and the final round of the tournament could bring some surprises.
A great day for Joseba Torres, who came back with a 67 to move into eighteenth place, and great news for fans visiting Ortuella this Sunday, as they'll be able to enjoy another 18 holes from the Basque maestro José María Olazábal, who made the cut (-1) thanks to a magnificent putt on the final hole. He sank it with a firm hand to secure his place and was met with thunderous applause from the crowd as the sun began to set: a breathtaking three-meter putt. Gerard Piris, Vicente Blázquez, and Álvaro Quirós also made the cut.
Those left out were Santi Luna, Hugo Espósito, Manu Ballesteros, Borja Etchart, David Borda, Carlos Suneson, Alvaro Velasco, and Carlos Balmaseda, who had a very bad day with 10 strokes on the 4th hole.
The tournament was launched in 2022 as the most important event on the national golf scene, and after four editions, with the participation of the very best in Spanish golf, including a Masters winner, it has established itself as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the national circuit. Supported by the Spanish Professional Golfers' Association, which organizes the event, and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, one of the tournament's objectives is to bring golf closer to enthusiasts, taking advantage of the magnificent Seve Ballesteros design at Meaztegi, a publicly owned course that has quickly developed a thriving junior golf academy.
This tournament is promoted by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Meaztegi Golf, and the PGA of Spain. It would not be possible without the main sponsors: Inelco, Fermax, Game Telecomunicaciones, Grescrap, the Basque Golf Federation, the Bizkaia Golf Federation, Aelvasa, El Correo, Tele Bilbao, Radio Nervión, Pangea, Chef Lali, and the main sponsor of the PGA Tour, TUMI.
