Alvaro Fernández Cabezuela is the first leader of the V Bizkaia PGAe Open after the first day played at the Meaztegi golf course, in Ortuella, which represents the fourth qualifying tournament of the III TUMI Spain Golf Tour circuit.

Cabezuela, who won the 2025 GolfEnCanarias Award for Best Professional Player in the Canary Islands, an award he received last February, carded a near-perfect 64, with two eagles per round and only one bogey on the 7th hole. A solid round with more successes on the front nine holes and mild weather, between the heat and a few light, refreshing drops, accompanied the golfers on this magnificent Seve Ballesteros course.

“The truth is, my sporting career has been wonderful,” the Tenerife native has stated on several occasions. A great golfer whom we already saw shine two years ago in the inaugural tournament of the Córdoba circuit, where he showed promise and who consolidated his talent with two victories on the 2025 Alps Tour.

With a total of -8, the Canary Islander leads by one stroke over Seville native Gonzalo Leal (26 years old), who finished with 65 strokes (-7), with two eagles in quick succession on holes 2 (par 5) and 4 (par 4). Gonzalo is one of the great promises of Spanish golf with a brilliant amateur career, including a Gold Medal at the 2018 European Under-18 Team Championship and his time playing college golf at the University of Iowa (USA).

Sigot López from Madrid shares third position with Agustín Quinquilla (-6), with all the options for the second round, in which the tournament cut will be established for the best 40 most tied players.

As for another favorite, the defending champion, Mario Galiano from Malaga (69 strokes), had a good day and finished in thirteenth place, tied at -3, which gives him the possibility of becoming a two-time champion of the tournament. He shares this position with Alfonso Buendía and Gerard Piris.

There are also important names among the top 15 in the table, such as the player Carlos Balmaseda (-4), in fifth position, tied with Carlos Pigem or Víctor García Broto, among others.

José María Olazábal, with 73 strokes, did not have a good day, especially after the double bogey on the 17th hole that has put him out of the cut, for the moment; as well as his nephew Joseba Torres.

The Bizkaia PGAe Open was established in 2022 as the most important event on the national golf scene. After four editions, and with the participation of the very best players in Spanish golf, including a two-time Masters winner, it has solidified its position as one of the most prestigious tournaments on the national circuit. Supported by the Spanish Professional Golfers' Association (PPGAE), which organizes the event, and the Bizkaia Provincial Council, one of the tournament's objectives is to bring golf closer to enthusiasts, taking advantage of the magnificent Seve Ballesteros design at Meaztegi, a publicly owned course that has quickly developed into a prominent junior golf academy.

This tournament is promoted by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Meaztegi Golf, and the PGA of Spain. It would not be possible without the main sponsors: Inelco, Fermax, Game Telecomunicaciones, Grescrap, the Basque Golf Federation, the Bizkaia Golf Federation, Aelvasa, El Correo, Tele Bilbao, Radio Nervión, Pangea, Chef Lali, and the main sponsor of the PGA Tour, TUMI. Other sponsors include Urbelan, Alkizabal, Gaimaz, Intxausti Construcciones, Boxify, Wilson, Bacalao Eguino, Titleist, FootJoy, Grupo Piérola, Larrondo Carpintería, Macallan, Last Dock, AFE, and Barceló Montecastillo. Also supporting the tournament are the DalecandELA and JonRahm4Kids Foundations.
