The National Golf Centre hosted a working meeting between representatives of the main Spanish golf institutions and the Deputy Secretary of Regional, Municipal and Electoral Analysis Policy of the People's Party, Elías Bendodo, with the aim of analyzing the current situation of the sector and addressing the main strategic lines to strengthen its competitiveness, sustainability and contribution to the Spanish economy.
The meeting was attended by the president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), Juan Guerrero-Burgos; the president of the Spanish Association of Golf Courses (AECG), Luis Nigorra; the vice president of the AECG, Carlos Pitarch; the president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFGA), Pablo Mansilla; and the general secretary of the AECG, Santiago Urquijo.
During the meeting, representatives of the sector presented Elías Bendodo with the report “Current Situation of Golf in Spain 2026”, a document that includes the main data, challenges and strategic proposals of an industry that is one of the major drivers of Spanish tourism.
Among the issues addressed were the recognition of golf as a strategic tourism industry, the need to move towards more competitive taxation for the sector, the promotion of hydraulic infrastructure and the use of reclaimed water, support for the energy transition of sports facilities and the defense of phytosanitary regulations based on technical and scientific criteria.
The contribution of golf to the national economy, employment, and the reduction of seasonality in tourism was also highlighted. Spain receives more than 1.4 million tourists annually whose main motivation is playing golf, consolidating its position as the leading European golf tourism destination and one of the world's benchmarks in the sector.
Representatives of Spanish golf also highlighted the progress of the PlaySpain.Golf project, a platform promoted by the RFEG and the AECG together with the main institutions of the sector, which already has more than 170 affiliated courses and more than 70 facilities with integrated online bookings, becoming a strategic tool for the international promotion of the Spain Golf Brand.
The meeting took place in a very cordial atmosphere and allowed the Popular Party to be reminded of the importance of continuing to strengthen public-private collaboration to consolidate a sector that generates wealth, stable employment, sustainability and international projection for Spain.
Both the RFEG and the AECG thanked Elías Bendodo for his interest in learning firsthand about the reality of Spanish golf and for his willingness to study the proposals put forward by the sector.
