Spanish golf has been left without representation in the 131st edition of The Amateur, one of the most prestigious and oldest competitions in the world held at the Royal Liverpool course, after Marcel Fonseca said goodbye in the round of 16 and Sergio Jiménez subsequently fell in extremis in the round of 16.

After a clean sweep for both Spaniards in the first round Match Play, the 1/16 final arrived, in which Marcel Fonseca faced the Englishman Lewy Hayward in a match in which the Catalan never found his best game and fell by a clear 6/5.

Fortunately, Sergio Jiménez managed to turn his duel with Irishman Matthew McClean around and won by 1 up. The Madrid native's match started very well until the 8th hole, when the Irishman managed to tie the match, and then there were successive changes in the score until the Madrid native managed to win on the 18th hole itself.

Sergio Jiménez started strong and was ahead on the scoreboard by one or two holes until the 17th hole, where Stuart Greham managed to tie the match, a result that remained until the 18th hole. Thus, a first extra hole was played, in which both players made par, and in the second extra hole, the Irish player took the victory with a birdie, while the Spaniard made a bogey.

Previously, the first Match Play phase, the 1/32 final, saw victories for both Sergio Jiménez and Marcel Fonseca. The Madrid native defeated Australian Wesley Hinton 2/1, while the Catalan had a slightly easier time against Finnish player Sakke Siltala, whom he defeated 3/2.
