Ángel Hidalgo finished his run at the 126th U.S. Open on a high note this Sunday. The Andalusian, with a total of +9, was the only Spaniard to play this weekend at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (New York) after Jon Rahm, David Puig, and Rocco Repetto-Taylor missed the cut after the first 36 holes. The title went to American Wyndham Clark (-4), who had a tougher time than expected to secure his second U.S. Open victory.
The man from Malaga improved on his two previous rounds of 74 strokes (+4) with a final card of 72 (+2) and a late birdie on the 16th hole that allowed him to finish with a smile. As in the previous rounds, Ángel Hidalgo maintained a solid rhythm throughout the round, but was penalized excessively with several bogeys and only one birdie.
Let's remember that the tournament reached its halfway point with the Guadalmina player making the cut and the bad news of Jon Rahm's elimination (+6), who was very sharp in the first 18 holes. Hidalgo finished his first round on Friday with a remarkable 69, but that positive momentum faded slightly in the second (74). Despite this, the overall feeling remained positive.
Jon Rahm's trajectory at Shinnecock Hills was similar: he finished the first 18 holes bogey-free (68), but collapsed dramatically in the back 18 (78). A +6 run between holes 12 and 16 practically ended his cut chances on a disastrous day with his irons and putting.
Wyndham Clark, who entered the final round with a comfortable six-stroke lead, saw Sam Burns close the gap to just one stroke with nine holes played. Despite this, Clark persevered and completed his victory.
David and Rocco, also out of the cut
It wasn't the tournament for the other two Spaniards in New York either. David Puig (+9) slightly improved his performance in the second round (77+72), as did Rocco Repetto-Taylor (+17), who finished with a 76; in any case, neither of them had a chance of making the cut at any point.
Carla Bernat, third in the Epson Tour
Carla Bernat continues to improve in her first season as a professional. This week she finished third at the Great Lakes Championship, an Epson Tour event, with a score of ten under par. The Castellón native carded a final round of 66, with seven birdies and a single bogey on the 18th, to finish eleven strokes under par.
On the other hand, Harang Lee (-7) achieved a remarkable fifth place at the Dutch Ladies Open, part of the Ladies European Tour schedule. The Cantabrian golfer is maintaining the excellent form she has displayed throughout the season.
Furthermore, at the Meijer LPGA Classic, the LPGA event where Carlota Ciganda won her third title on the circuit last year, Azahara Muñoz (T27, -7) was the most inspired of the four Spanish players. The tournament also produced the memorable image of Julia López's hole-in-one on the first day.
