Playa Serena Golf Club will once again take center stage in European professional golf with the Alps de Andalucía-Roquetas de Mar, an Alps Tour event taking place from June 11th to 13th on the Almería course. This will be the fourth time the club has hosted a tournament on this circuit, following previous editions in 2013, 2014, and 2025.
The continuation of the tournament at Playa Serena confirms the strong relationship established between the club and one of the main development circuits of European golf, an alliance that reinforces the position of Roquetas de Mar as a benchmark destination for holding professional competitions.
“For Playa Serena Golf Club, it is a great source of pride to have established ourselves as a venue for the Alps Tour. The fact that a professional circuit continues to place its trust in our facilities demonstrates that the club is up to the standards of an international competition,” explains Francisco Javier Martín Mendoza, the club's managing director.
Mendoza also emphasizes that the recurring presence of the Alps Tour is part of a broader strategy initiated in 2023 with the Challenge de España. “We don’t see it as just a one-off competition, but as part of a project to position Playa Serena and Roquetas de Mar on the map of European professional golf,” he notes.
The three consecutive editions held since 2024 have yielded very positive results for the venue. Beyond the sporting impact, the tournament has generated increasing involvement among members, season ticket holders, staff, and fans, becoming one of the most special weeks on the club's calendar.
“Each edition has allowed us to grow, learn, and improve both in course preparation and event organization. Having three consecutive years confirms the strong relationship between the Alps Tour and Playa Serena, based on trust, professionalism, and the positive response to the course,” says the director.
A strategic and demanding route
Although it may seem like an accessible course at first glance, Playa Serena presents numerous challenges for players. The wind, a common feature along the Mediterranean coast, becomes a decisive factor that forces professionals to constantly adapt their strategy.
“It’s a course that demands a lot from the player. It’s not enough to just hit it long. You have to place the ball well, make good decisions, and have a very precise short game. The combination of wind, water, strategy, and challenging greens makes Playa Serena a very complete setting for a professional competition,” explains Mendoza.
Given their characteristics, the club director believes that the players with the greatest chances of success will be those capable of combining patience, tactical intelligence, and ball control.
“I think the all-rounder who usually stands out here is the solid player from tee to green, with the ability to adapt to the day's conditions. The wind can completely change how you approach the course, and miscalculations are often costly,” he adds.
Stage for future champions
The tournament's recent history also demonstrates the importance of the Alps Tour as a launching pad for future stars of European golf. The best example is Italian Andrea Romano, winner at Playa Serena in 2015, who this season has earned promotion to the HotelPlanner Tour after racking up three victories in the third tier of European golf.
“It’s a source of pride for the club to see how players who have won here continue to grow and reach higher levels. The Alps Tour is fundamental in the development of many young professionals, and we like to think that Playa Serena is part of that journey,” Mendoza points out.
The course will be in optimal condition after several weeks of intensive work by the maintenance team. Their efforts have focused on the greens, fairways, rough, and playing areas, as well as all the details related to the tournament's presentation and logistics.
“Rather than making major structural changes, the goal has been to fine-tune the field and present it with the highest possible level of quality so that players find conditions in line with a professional competition,” he explains.
Regarding the key points of the course, Mendoza points out that the outcome of the tournament will once again be influenced by the wind. However, he particularly highlights the section formed by holes 7, 8, and 9, as well as holes 13 and 14, which during the championship will be changed from par 5s to challenging par 4s.
“Playa Serena is a course where the tournament can be decided in many different places. The wind, strategy, and the player's ability to adapt will mean that key moments will appear throughout the round, not just on the final holes,” he concludes.
With all these ingredients, the Alps de Andalucía-Roquetas de Mar tournament will once again bring together some of the most promising young golfers in Europe at a venue that has become a regular and highly regarded stop on the Alps Tour calendar. It will take place from June 11th to 13th.
The Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, the Roquetas de Mar City Council, the Andalusian Regional Government, the Higher Sports Council, Kyocera, Bodegas Juan Gil and the Alps Tour are sponsors of this tournament, which is organized by JGolf 18.0.
