The 2026 European Individual Mid Amateur Championship begins this Thursday, June 4th, at the Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club, near Lisbon. This year, Spanish participation is limited to four golfers, whose mission is to emulate past winners Ane Urchegui and Carlos de Corral.
The men's competition, which has the highest number of Spanish participants, brings together 106 golfers, including Jacobo López Malo from Galicia, Manuel Gómez from Granada, and Jaime Ravina from La Rioja.
And in the women's race, the options lie in the hands of Irene Rollán from Gipuzkoa, who is the current Spanish Mid Amateur champion, a title she has retained in Castellón in April.
Rollán was precisely the best Spanish player last year on this same Portuguese course; she finished fifth, five strokes behind the leader.
The tournament is played over three days, with the last day reserved for the top 54 and tied players in the men's category and for the top 33 and tied players in the women's category.
Spaniards in the winners' list
The European Men's Mid Amateur Championship has been held annually since 1991, while the women's category has only had five editions held, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
In the first case, the list of winners includes Luis Gabarda (1992), Víctor Fernández (1998), José María Zamora (2005), and Carlos de Corral on two occasions (2017 and 2018). Jacobo Cestino, second in the 2010 and 2011 editions, also reached the podium, which was occupied by Luis Gabarda and Eduardo de la Riva in third place in 1994 and Eduardo Corsini in 2015.
Meanwhile, in the women's category, Spain's record includes Urchegui's great victory in 2022 in France, after winning in a playoff against local player Charlotte Guilleux. The Basque golfer herself finished third in the 2024 edition.
