The Stanford University women's basketball team, featuring Spaniards Andrea Revuelta and Paula Martín, has won its fourth NCAA championship. They defeated Southern California 4-1 in the final at Omni La Costa Stadium in California.
Paula Martín secured the first point by defeating Catherine Park (3/2), while Andrea Revuelta lost on the 18th hole to Kylie Chong. The rest of the Stanford team's victories followed.
This is Stanford's fourth title (2016, 2024, 2022, 2015), their third in the last five years. It's worth noting that they won in 2014 with Paula Martín on the team, while last year, with Andrea Revuelta, they lost in the final.
It's worth noting that Duke, the team featuring Anna Cañadó, also qualified for this second phase, played in a Match Play format. Southern California was their opponent in the quarterfinals (3-2). Stanford, meanwhile, first defeated Pepperdine and then Michigan, winning both matches 5-0.
In addition to the players mentioned, six other Spanish players competed in the first phase of the final: Alexandra Vidal (Iowa State), Paula Francisco (Florida), Cayetana Fernández (Texas A&M), Balma Dávalos (Auburn), Rocío Tejedo (LSU) and Lucía Valderrama (Michigan State).
Andrea and Paula, brilliant at the Regionals
Andrea Revuelta and Paula Martín continued to make history in the University League by leading their university to the final with Andrea's victory and Paula's second place in the Regional, a step prior to the final title competition.
Andrea Revuelta clinched the individual title with a final score of -12, capped by a bunker birdie on the 18th hole of the final round. The Madrid native secured her victory with two flawless final rounds of 65 (-6). Imperial.
Second place went to Paula Martín (-10), who played all three days under par. Both were the driving force behind Stanford, which in turn achieved something unprecedented in the last twenty years: placing all five of its golfers in the Top 10 of a Regional tournament.
In total, six Regionals were held in which seven other Spanish women secured their place in the final: Cayetana Fernández and Rocío Tejedo qualified in Texas; Alexandra Vidal in Louisville GC; Lucía Valderrama and Paula Balanzategui in North Carolina; Anna Cañadó in Michigan; and Paula Francisco in Tallahassee.
All these results are the icing on the cake of a season in which Andrea Revuelta, Paula Martín, Paula Francisco and Marta Aguilar themselves have achieved other triumphs.
